Topic: Contest - build a 3D printer

I'm offering a contest to spec out a 3D printer.

The boss wants a new 3D printer, so I considered building one this time.

Contest details:

  • Put together a list of parts OR a list of modifications to an existing kit

  • Contest begins 8/14/2015 and will end 8/28/2015

  • Winner will be chosen by voting (voting will be open 8/28 - 9/4 VIA PM)

  • PRIZE will be $30 Filastruder store credit.

Rules:

  • Printer will be used in an industrial (production) setting

  • Must be able to print at least 300C

  • A larger print area is desired

  • The rest is up to you!

Be creative and detailed!

Re: Contest - build a 3D printer

Well, this isn't specifically a contest entry, but I'm in the middle of building my own new printer. Lots of details here:

http://tomhorsley.com/hardware/corexy/corexy.html

and especially on this page:

http://tomhorsley.com/hardware/corexy/build.html

However, I am beginning to suspect I may need some revisions to make the whole structure stiffer. I'll see how things go when I get a chance to get back to work on it (I've had some other stuff to eat up my time lately :-).

Looks like an entry to me. What are you planning to do to make it stiffer?

Depends on the results I get when I get far enough to make it move the way it is :-). It might be OK. It might be just the print bed that needs better carriages on each side, or it might wind up needing bigger corner brackets to hold the structure more solidly. I won't really know till I experiment with it (but fortunately, it is a project mainly designed to consume lots of my spare time :-).

Of course if I wanted one for a business, I'd think long and hard about this beast rather than building one (I'm building mine for fun, probably not profit :-).

Re: Contest - build a 3D printer

As an entry to your competition this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but based on it being for work and your requirements:

Parts List:

1x Fusion3 F306
1x designed-by-you laser-cut PC enclosure

Done. smile

It fits the bill: 12" volume, and the E3Dv6 will print 300C+. From memory they're pricey ($4k) but unlike a makerbot looks well engineered... /burn

SD3. Mk2b + glass, heated enclosure, GT2 belts, direct drive y shaft, linear bearings, bowden-feed E3D v5 w/ 0.9° stepper
Smoothieboard via Octoprint on RPi

Based on their specs you dont need an enclosure for hard to print material. They claim their bed design and heating method keeps the ambient temp around the print area stable.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
Anycubic 4MAX best $225 ever invested.
Voxelabs Proxima SLA. 6 inch 2k Mono LCD.

Re: Contest - build a 3D printer

Well, it's not a complete BOM or a completely finished design, but here's my concept for what was the 3rd generation of the mapleMaker printers.

Specs:
14"x13"x12.5" build volume.
12"x12" heated build plate
Dual Bulldog XL (Or Lite) direct drive extruders
Dual Hexagon 1.75mm hot ends
12mm linear rods and bearings
8mm acme threaded rods and anti-backlash nuts
GT2 belts and pulleys
Kysan NEMA17 56oz steppers for all axis'
80/20 10-Series aluminum extrusion structure with acrylic panels
RepRap Duet with expansion board, or Smoothieboard 5X
Raspberry Pi 2 for on-board slicing/wireless printing
7" HDMI Touch panel LCD for on-board slicing/control
Raspberry Pi Camera for remote monitoring
USB/HDMI breakouts on rear of chassis
IGUS cable carriers on all axis
Meanwell LRS-350 12V 30A PSU
Easily removable Y axis for shipping transportation
Quick disconnects on all harnesses
Removable extruder tool head, swap out for future upgrades (mill, laser etc)

The design is mostly complete, only the mounts for the LCD panel remain. The design was done on and off for the last 2 months or so. I've partially abandoned it for the time being, having moved on to designing a larger (much larger) coreXY machine instead. I'll eventually post everything up on www.maplemakermedia.com though smile

Re: Contest - build a 3D printer

Thanks for the vote of confidence, though I still have my doubts about "production/industrial" capabilities :-). One of these days I need to get around to soldering the additional headers on the smoothieboard so I can hook up the motors and see if they turn and the stop switches and see if it notices them.
