Topic: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

Having a Y axis layer shift of 1/2 inch to 2inches.  I can not figure it out. I have two smartone 200 printers and just one is giving me this problem.  I have tightened the belt checked cooling and upped the power on the stepper driver. Loosened the Y bed rail rollers but not of that made any difference.  It will shift y layer some times on the second layer and some times about 80% through the print. no rhyme to it.

Maybe a failing endstop. If the endstop glitches during printing it will count the point of the glitch as home and shift everything from there to the proper coordinates based on that new position being home..

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Wow never thought of that. Might be worth trying to swap out endstop.

The printer that is giving me the problem is on a long USB cable and the other is not.  Can a long usb cable cause this also?

Re: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

I had a theory in my own adventures recently, but apparently if the computer's USB port can handle longer cables, then this is fine.
I am running a Sanguinololu with a 6' cable, and a RUMBA with a 15' cable.

Try cooling the motor and driver.

Hi driver has a fan on it and motor does not get a chance to get hot sometimes before the y problem happens.

Re: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

Overextrusion can also cause a shit. Raised blobs will catch the nozzle during travel and give a noticeable thump. Improper height (printing too close) can also cause this.

Re: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

My apologies to the OP, I would agree with AZERATE.  Overextrusion can and will cause an axis to shiFt.

well overextrusion was not the cause.  still at a lose

Re: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

While it prints try moving the wires on the Y endstop and see if that causes anything.

Re: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

Nope sorry tried messing with the wires and nothing changed.  Works perfect sometimes then will bad layer shift about every 4 or 5th print

Re: Bad Y axis layer shift problem can't figure out

I have the exact same problem with my doodl 2, it usually happens to me on every 3 to 4 prints 80 to 90% done... Did you perhaps find the problem?
