Topic: Custom(-ish) build

Hey guys -

I bought some parts from another forum user a couple weeks ago, and finally have everything assembled. Thought I'd share it.

So far, it seems to print better than the $4,000 Airwolf printer sitting next to it. I haven't tried anything complex yet but what I have printed looks incredible.

E3D Volcano hotend
Direct drive extruder
Aluminum frame
All metal mounts except for the hotend and carriage rods
Build area is 10x10x10
Rumba electronics (DRV8825 stepper drivers)
110V bed heater w/ SSR

This is my calibration cube. Glue-stick to help with focus.

Re: Custom(-ish) build

Looks awesome, Josh!

As long as you're not using the glue stick for adhesion to the bed, it's cool to be in the picture smile

The carriage looks to be standard XY motion...but you did say Core XY; maybe I'm seeing it wrong.

Either way...really nice!

SD2 - Stock - Enclosure - Heated Bed - Glass Plate - Auto Fire Extinguisher
Ord Bot Hadron - RAMPS 1.4 - Bulldog XL - E3D v6 - 10" x 10" PCB Heated Build w/SSR - Glass Plate

Whoops! I had the wrong terminology.

Also, I am using the gluestick for adhesion - am I missing something on that>

Re: Custom(-ish) build

No issues...thought I was losing my mind for a second!

Glue stick is fine if it works for you...I find it extremely messy after a while and hard to clean.  I try to stick with AquaNet hairspray...I find I don't even need to re-apply it until after 8-10 prints or so.

I've never tried hairspray but i've always had great success with the gluestick. It is a trick to clean though. I'll have to give the hairspray a try. Does it have to be Aquanet or does any extra-hold do?

Re: Custom(-ish) build

Aqua net is preferred.

Re: Custom(-ish) build

Its cheap as well, so all the better.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
Anycubic 4MAX best $225 ever invested.
Voxelabs Proxima SLA. 6 inch 2k Mono LCD.
Anycubic Predator, massive Delta machine. 450 x 370 print envelope.

Re: Custom(-ish) build

In answer to the "does any extra-hold do": we can't get aquanet here, so have to look for "vinyl copolymer" (or a variation) and "acrylates copolymer" on the back. These seem to be the important bits, and are pretty common amongst the extra hold varieties.

Re: Custom(-ish) build

I stole some of the girlfriend's hairspray that has "acrylates copolymer" in it, and I should have tried it sooner! So much better. Thanks guys!

Well my girlfriend once borrowed my printer's hairspray. Similar reaction. We now have two cans. Go figure haha!

Re: Custom(-ish) build

Nice job,  what do you figure it cost to build?

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D
