Topic: SD4 not being recognized by computers

I was cleaning my nozzle before printer, the printer was on and up to temp, then all of a sudden it disconnected, and now it won't be recognized by my PC or Mac, I have unplugged it and plugged it back in, and I have no usb notification sound like I usually do.
I recently installed an E3D v6 and have had about 6 prints with it so far.
Any tips?

Re: SD4 not being recognized by computers

Sounds like you caused a short with your brush. I assume you where using a brass brush like most of us do, yet there is a little catch nobody seems to get. The brush can be used and should be used when the nozzle is hot, but NOT while power is applied as in heating.

You need to first confirm the power supply is still god and was not affected. Measure the output on all outputs and confirm they are the correct value. If they are good then move to your mainboard on the printer. See if it has a fuse, and see if that fuse is open. Actually I would check the fuse first since that is it's purpose.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: SD4 not being recognized by computers

I don't think Rev-E printrboards have fuses.  I have full power to everything, just no connection.

Was the brush brass like Carl suggested?

Re: SD4 not being recognized by computers

I presume you were clearing a clog?  What if it wasn't clogged but had a broken or intermittent connection to your thermistor or heat cartridge?  That may cause your connection issues to your PC.  I would guess that during cleaning you moved the wires just enough to break an already weak wire/connection.  All you can do is look around and see if you can find anything.

It very well could be the thermistor wire. It had broken once and I repaired it, and ordered a new one for when that repair inevitably failed, but could that cause the communication issue?
I'll repair that when I get home and report back!

Re: SD4 not being recognized by computers

I'm not saying it definitely is the cause of the communication error.  But I have seen it happen so it seems like a logical place to start.

No luck, replaced the damaged thermistor, and the problem persists.

Check:

- USB cable connections
- Swap cable if you have a spare
- If the Com port somehow got switched in RH

And the wires to the heater cartridge?

Re: SD4 not being recognized by computers

Swapped usb cables, no luck. The computers don't even recognize the plug and play.

Heater cartridge wires are good.

Did you make the necessary changes to the firmware when you upgraded to the E3D?

You could try to re-flash the firmware just like you did last time...if successful, it rules out communication problems with the board itself.  Did you use Arduino to re-flash?
