Topic: BIG problem with SD4

Every time my extruder nozzle is printing on the left side of the printer bed (beyond 45.00) on the x-axis, for some reason the motor retracts the plastic instead of extruding the plastic!!!!

WHY!?

It's not software, cable or computer problem.  I've tested and re-tested.  It is 100% a problem with the SD4 printer!

Re: BIG problem with SD4

That sounds like a software issue to me. I can only assume this happens with more than just one stl? What slicer are you using? And what version?

Re: BIG problem with SD4

I'm using Simplify 3D, but trust me, it's an issue with the motor.

So on the right side of the printer, it extrudes OK?

Re: BIG problem with SD4

Yeah,  I'm guessing something about the stress on the cables causes the motor to lose a connection.  I also couldn't spin the motor smoothly when it was on the left hand side of the printer.  If just disassembled everything and re-asssembled everything for a test.

Re: BIG problem with SD4

If you are confident it is the motor, you could do one of two things to confirm:
1) Extrude while sitting on the right side and flex the wires. If it retracts, you have a short.
2) Swap your Y and E motors. If you face the same issue with a proven to work motor, it is a software problem.

Re: BIG problem with SD4

Just finished your instructions verbatim. Seems to be printing smoothly again.  I'll inform everyone if otherwise.  This printer is great, but the maintenance required is sometimes aggravatingly pointless.

Are the Makerbots really so seamless that they would require less maintenance?

Re: BIG problem with SD4

Hahahahahaha
Makerbot is going through a class action lawsuit for "their knowledge of faulty 'smart' extruders".

Back on topic though, glad to hear you're back up. Let us know how it turns out

Re: BIG problem with SD4

Yes, keep us posted...

the difference in your ability to spin the motor smoothly based on position would in fact indicate a shorting out of the motors coil pairs...you may want to inspect the wiring harness more closely...

Re: BIG problem with SD4

Once you get your SD4 dialed in, you'll be very pleased with it.

Re: BIG problem with SD4

I thought it was dialed in.  This problem is out of my control.  Had two flawless prints and then it happened again.  It's as if the motor keeps jamming??

Re: BIG problem with SD4

Hard to see, but it seems as if the motor shaft is not turning at all...is that correct?

Re: BIG problem with SD4

I have to say i'm finally impressed with SD.  They called me back just as I shared this video and are going to be sending me a new motor.

Awesome!  I was going to say that if you checked the wiring back to the board and did not find any shorts, etc. that it is probably the motor...

Re: BIG problem with SD4

It turns less than 1 degree and then bounces back to the start point. Bothe when extruding and retracting.

Re: BIG problem with SD4

By the way, I just want to mention that I have a KickStarter currently running and need all of the promoting I can get.  If you like the project, could you please share or help?  It's printed on the SD4.  Thank you all.
