Topic: Extruder resolution increase

So I had an idea to increase the resolution of the filament steps/mm by removing the extruder gear and knurl or just cut groves in the 5mm shafts and have that extrude the filament. I haven't measured the gear but I estimate a 2x resolution increase just by doing this. There is an added benefit because you are reducing the rotating mass which helps with accuracy and allows less wasted torque.

I'm going to test it out when I develop how I'm going to make the cuts and just have the time in general.

Re: Extruder resolution increase

The problem with this is you only really get one tooth grabbing the filament at a time, due to the much reduced filament diameter.

Also the shaft inertia due to the hobbled hub is like 0.001% of the motor load in this application.

Re: Extruder resolution increase

I don't know why elmoret didn't mention this but order a Hobbed Goblin from filastruder.  It will do exactly what you are thinking without the fuss.  I have covered this on other threads but a summation would be... Combined with a 1/32 driver it will very close in quality to a BulldogXL.  Take it one step further and add a .9 stepper motor.  I like to call it the poor mans BulldogXL.  Of all the different extruder setups I have used this is my favorite.

I try not to pimp my products *all* of the time. big_smile

Still a great option.

Somebody needs to do it, may as well be you! wink

I knew nothing about the "hobgoblin" until just recently via a post by someone else. Something I am thinking hard about, but other items need attention first.

Hmmm, maybe we need a proper "Vendors" section where new products can be introduced & discussed by "trusted" vendors. just a thought....

The thing is this is essentially a free upgrade and that's the point everyone is missing.

I don't see it as upgrade when as Elmoret pointed out you will only have one maybe two teeth in contact with the filament. This will cause control and maybe even slippage issues during retractions.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Only one way to find out  ; )

Thanks for the info on the hobgoblin. I'll definitely keep it in mind for future upgrades.
