Topic: Surface issues what to adjust?

Hello All,

sorry to bother again with questions, as usual i try my best on searching in the web and then trial end error before trying to bother you guys... but this time no luck...

I'm priting in ABS with Cura on a Prusa i3 steel with a e3d v6, nozzle 0.4mm. temp 220°C~230°C, heatbed 105°C 40 mm/s
i can give the config file if you want...
anyweay, I've stored the filament in a ziplock sealed back with some Silica gel bags and still seeing this.. i'm not sure if this is because of humidity, or because of the acceleration and jerk settings, I have configured or just because of the slicer (Cura 15.04)...

any clues?

thanks a lot!

Re: Surface issues what to adjust?

Looks like over extrusion to me. Could also be humidty. Do you have an enclosure around your printer? ABS needs a stable atmosphere. No drafts, a constant temperature, and so on. If you don't have and enclosure I would not waste my time or money on ABS. You will just be wasting filament.

PLA based and PET+ are the only filaments I would use without an enclosure.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Surface issues what to adjust?

i have not an closure but printer is in an closed room with very stable warm temperature. i could build an enclosure to test if you are rather sure this issue is mostly due to lack of enclosure and not related to any calibration paramethers. i can also try reducing extrusion.. which one do you think i should try first?

Re: Surface issues what to adjust?

An enclosure for ABS is always a good idea...even something temporary with foam board.

Speaking of calibrations...have you done both the extruder calibration as well as the Flow Rate calibration (with a single-walled cube)?

https://solidoodletips.wordpress.com/20 … libration/

Please note the extrusion width with a 0.4 nozzle should be 0.48...the video was done with a 0.35 nozzle calling for a 0.42 extrusion width.

EDIT:  Hit the "Next" button on the Wordpress page to get to the Flow Rate calibration guide...

and dont forget to measure your filament for a proper filament size - it does make a difference.

pull a couple meters/yards off the roll and take several measurements along the length of it... average out the dimensions and use that number for your filament size entry - do NOT assume 1.75mm (or 3mm if that is what you are using) I have some that averages out to 1.73mm

Re: Surface issues what to adjust?

hello gents, thanks for all your answers, I've followed the steps noted recalibrate and printed the cube (0.48 instead of 0.42 for the wall for the extrusion width, however something very strange happened:

one wall (in the back= was 0.49 mm, the one in the front was 0.43, the one on the right was0.47 and the one in the left (where the loops were closed and started) was 0.48 but has this awful overlap issue:

but the other walls are nice:

http://s08.imageupper.com/1_t/3/M1437865129791054_2.jpg

it's strange cause  on that overlap segment slic3r decided to do double wall, or more precisely, pass 2 ties for that segment of the square (every layer)

I've run some more tests on the printer and it seems like every time one of those marks appeared is because the printer changed direction, let's say, it finished a loop and then increases one layer in Z and then goes back over the same line it was coming (in the opposite direction of course)... kind of like the u turn to start the next layer..

Also, in the cubes, that problem started reducing as I increased the "DEFAULT_XYJERK" parameter, which was initially in 20 mm/sec, then for some other calibrations i reduced it to 10, and did not notice this effect immediately... increased back to 20 and still had some of that awful effect (not as much) and then run a couple of more test untill reached 25 mm/sec to get this behavior:

if i go higher the crazy overlap appears again...

Re: Surface issues what to adjust?

I think I found the reason.. after calibratingt the flow rate at 98%, the sides were pretty much 0.48 +/-.01.. so for me that's good enough.. nevertheless, i was still having that weird behavior.. doun that two option on Slic3r, under "Printer Setting/Extruder" where checked: "Retract on layer change" and "Wipe while retracting".

Reducing that and reducing the overlap from 15% to 10% seems to have fixed the issue... now everything is AWESOME again!

thanks for all your help!
