Topic: Homemade Filament maker ?

Has anyone here built their own Filament Extruder ?
For Making filament.
Looks like a Fun project !

Save your Plastic bottles and Other Reusable Trash ! tongue

Here's pictures of one of many designs I found online:
It makes about 8" of filament per minute.
Download some parts at Thingiverse.

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

I've not seen any videos of anyone making filament using re-cycled plastic yet ?
(Chopping it up themselves)
Anyone done that ?

I  think a spool of filament I have, is made from Re-cycled Trash. tongue

Yes, many people. For example:

Thanks for the link !
Very Interesting !
I really like the Wall-mounted design.

Is the Laser there to indicate if the filament Guide has Moved, or something Else ?
Did I miss the explanation of the Guide, on floor, somewhere ?

And I don't see a cooling-fan at the extruder-nozzle, that I thought was necessary ?

Keep reading in the filastruder section of this forum. You'll learn the answers to all those questions! smile

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

Cooling fan is not necessary in vertical orientation because the loop is undisturbed.

Laser guide is to determine how fast to wind the spool. Keeping the loop a constant size means a constant pull force on the nozzle.

Ah, Very Interesting,
speed of Take-up spool must be perfectly Matched to speed of extrusion,
I did not think about that.
(Adding the Take-up spool really complicates the set-up
but it Also appears that addition greatly Improves the setup)

Thanks for Info.

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

Typical filament diameter variance is +/-0.05mm without the winder, +/-0.02mm with.

Excellent commercial filament is +/-0.02mm. Typical commercial filament is +/-0.02mm.

Wow,  yikes +/-0.02mm with winder, smile Amazing !

I can certainly see how extruding vertically , mounted on wall, would Improve Variance Also.
Letting gravity pull the correct direction.

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

Some users have reported +/-0.01mm or +/-0.00mm. +/-0.02mm is more typical, though.

2 x 4 frame with plywood panel. You could even put it on casters so it could be rolled in to a closet or out of the way. You could even stain and varnish or paint for a finished look.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
Anycubic 4MAX best $225 ever invested.
Voxelabs Proxima SLA. 6 inch 2k Mono LCD.
Anycubic Predator, massive Delta machine. 450 x 370 print envelope.

Did that for mine. I'll show and tell in the Filastruder section once I'm done with the build.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

I was wondering if HIPS filament would be good to make the thermal-insulator
used in middle of filament maker's piping ?
I know that Polystyrene is a very good thermal-Insulator.

Or is there an Easier way to make the insulator ?

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

You don't need an insulator in the piping, Filastruder is proof of this.

Okay, I thought the Auger-bit section would get too hot, without the Insulator !
That's what I read about other designs.
Are you maybe running at a Lower temp than they are ?
It's difficult to tell what is in that part of assembly, from pictures,
but it looks very different there, between hopper and nozzle.

Note: I've mainly been looking at the Lyman design

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

Filastruder has been run up to 300C, same or more than other designs. Lyman guessed he needed it, but was incorrect.

Is there anything Else in that assembly that Acts as an Insulator ?
I don't see how the auger could Not get hot, if there is not ?
(especially since it is Above the Heater)

Or Does it get hot, but hot plastic just flows out of auger ?

Re: Homemade Filament maker ?

No insulator. Temperature near the hopper is around 60C if the nozzle is at 200C. This does not present a problem for feeding of pellets.
