Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Tim - I have downloaded your dropbox zip files and was wondering if the BOM was available for your project?  I also think that there is a way to do auto spooling from the extruder without to much work.  You already have a rotational power source.  I think that that and just a little bit of string will solve the problem.

For the time being, I am not publishing the BOM. If you have a specific question, I'm happy to discuss over PM.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Tim,

I also got my kit earlier this week. I should have it fully together in a few hours and I will definitely provide you some feedback on the build. Hasn't been too difficult, just some self inflicted setbacks when attempting to drill the nozzle without a drill press.

This might help some people with the motor coupling assembly:

In step 4, The instructions said the flat portion of the shaft should be 1/2" long. As you can see from the picture above, it should be 1/4".

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Updated instructions to clarify the above:

Also, please be sure the temperature gets to 190 degrees before turning on the motor the first time! There should be no popping noises - if there are, post here, something is wrong.

Ok, I'm with Ben.  Just arrived here and just finished reading 18 pages.  Please put me down for one in the next batch, and when do you think that might be?  (Not expecting soon, sure you need feedback from the last batch first.)  Off to read the instructions now.

Done!

I'd hope in a couple weeks - whenever I start hearing from the beta guys!

Speaking of, has anyone from the second round gotten theirs up and running yet?

I will have mine up and running tomorrow at some point. I got the notch cut in the nipple and ground the lips on the ends yesterday. We're you able to remove the brass plug without the heat being on?

Nice! Any pictures or video you can provide? Any contamination?

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Still waiting on delivery of v2 here.

I will get some more pictures up later. My concerns at the moment...

I back lit some fresh clear to show the contamination.  It would be almost impossible to see in another color.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Departed, how long have you ran the v2 to clear contamination so far?

Not long. Probably got 2 or 3 hours on it today. It is possible that this will clear itself as it runs longer.  I took a great deal of care to ensure that there was not contaminates in the nipple at assembly so every bit had to be caused by the auger or the pellets rubbing against the inside of the nipple.

I'm really thinking stainless might be the way to go. Even with the higher cost.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Well, that's not good.

I haven't run clear, but I've put a lot (probably a kg or two) of white ABS through my printer.

Stainless nipples would be a good bit harder to cut. I haven't tried. The cost is only $5 more or so.

Are you sure there's no contaminants in your ABS pellets? That's the other variable here.

Still waiting on brass caps from mcmaster, I didn't have enough for yours.

468

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Thinking about it, it would probably be better to use a mesh filter than stainless nipple. I actually talk about this in the instructions - McMaster part number 85385T867.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Exruders  and injection mold machines use magnets to prevent metal from getting to the nozzle. A mesh would work but maybe some small rare earth magnets would help. Also, a wire bore brush might help remove the crap from the main pipe. They are like 4-5 bucks on mcmmaster.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

The ID of the pipe  is real rough Before cutting the slot I wrapped a piece of coarse cloth backed emery cloth around a piece of 3/8 wood dowel rod (end slit 1 inch deep) chucked into a hand drill and polished out the pipe ID.

If you want to send me some clear ABS, I'd be happy to run it.

You can get transparent ABS from this guy on Ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plastic-Pellets … 43b7b3aeff

Interesting. Wonder if that would work on such a small scale.

I am positive there are no contaminates in the pellets. I am puzzled as to where they are coming from.  It might clear with time but it was consistent throughout the batch I ran.
