Hi.
We are looking at purchasing the MakerBot Replicator 2X in the next week or so.
We will mainly be using this 3D unit to build models of designs we do before going to extrusion/die casing and so on.
From what I can gather, this unit seems to be fairly popular although a larger build platform would be a bonus!
1) Any advice on this unit would be greatly appreciated
2) Can we build a model in sections and join them together by sectioning our file.

What size models will you be building and how detailed will they need to be?
you can join sectiosn quite easily but you will save money with the solidoodle think of having 3 solidoodle 3's working for the price of 1 makerbot. and each with a alrger build area. that way you have a backup
Most models would be about 12 x 10 x10. Can make these models in 2 sections (if the build area is not big enough), as we are only trying to determine if our model is practical for assembly before we actually go to the investment casting process. The details would need to be fairly accurate, but not critical
I think the Replicator 2x will only support PLA which may be an issue. ABS is easier to join with acetone or ABS glue and can be doused in a vapor bath for seamless connections and smooth skins whereas PLA might be a little harder to have a polished look, has to rely on superglue, and is much more brittle. The Replicator is cooler looking, a little more polished, and maybe easier for non tinkerers, but really not a better printer as far as print quality is concerned.

The replicator 2x has a heated bed. Will support abs. Also has dual extruders.
The 2X can use ABS or PLA. It boils down to how much you want to pay... however the MB has 2 extruders stock which is nice depending on what your going to print with it.
my bad 2x not 2. Wrote it and still mossed which one we were talking about. Agreed on the price point. It would be nice to have without a constrained budget.
Without a constrained budget I would get a Form One for another 500.
I was looking at one from them, but not the replicator 2x. I didn't feel the two color was worth the almost $1000 price hike. The resolution is the same on the solidoodle 3 and replicator 2/2x but price was a major turn of, as was their software.
If I knew more about them I would have probably bought a kit and built my own, but not that confident yet. Maybe after I get mine and play with it for a while.
