It is night and day. Aside from calibrations, the only mod I have done is adding a well nut to the z axis to address banding, but I did that because it couldn't hurt, not because it was causing any actual issues.

Here's a really good calibration to do. I recommend doing extrusion and flow calibrations first and then do the nickel test.
