Topic: Post your print station!

I thought it might be cool to post your printer workspaces. Some of us have some ideas for spool storage, cases, etc. Here's mine:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1786359/Photo%20Jan%2004%2C%203%2002%2035%20PM.jpg

Solidoodle:

  • QU-BD hotend, Solidoodle PEEK (Nov-12)

  • 12"x12" acrylic panels held on with magnets

  • Newer SD print carriage (Nov-12)

  • Glass bed, 6"x6", with hairspray and binder clips

Fume Exhaust:
I use a 40mm fan, always on, and some paper and tape to create negative pressure in the Solidoodle. The airflow is low enough that the build area still remains about 35C, but high enough that I never smell plastic anymore.

Computer:
I'm using a Asus EEEPC 7" netbook, with Windows XP. I remote into this (TightVNC) from my phone or Macbook Pro. There's also a PS3Eye webcam to the right of the Solidoodle 2, so that I can monitor the prints remotely. I'm running Reptetier and Slic3r.

Upcoming improvements:

  • Lawsy Jigsaw replacement

  • I'd like to add a PTFE tube from the printhead to the back of the printer. The filament sometimes snaps off when printing, because of the 90 degree angle. Speaking of which, I'd like to make a switch that kills the printer if the filament feed goes empty. Ideas on that?

  • A faster netbook to remote into. Slicing on the netbook is anemic.

  • Ability to switch on/off Solidoodle power from the netbook.

Printing remotely is pretty sweet. In the past, I've printed, used the extruder head to knock the print off the bed (after the bed is cold) and started another print - all without being physically present.

So, that's what I've got. Post away!

How is she running?

Has the ability to print anything he can dream up.
Uses Mr. Pibb as base of tower for camera mount.
Love it

I'm finally happy with it, after getting a new print carriage (original damage in shipping) and ditching the SD hotend. I've pushed a lot of plastic through it, mostly using my filament maker, and it's been pretty reliable.

Which hotend did you end up with?

QU-BD with Solidoodle PEEK.

if you duct the fumes out of the enclosure doesn't that cause the temp to drop inside it.

Ultimaker S3.

Seal the enclosure well, the fan makes a negative pressure relative to ambient, so fumes can't get out but airflow is low enough that internal temperatures are not signifigantly affected. I've printed 6" x 6" without warp.

Re: Post your print station!

So far pretty simple addons.   the panels are held on with magnets and I am redesigning my spool holder to work with it.  Next up as a tool holder for the needle nose, chisel, and calipers I use so often!

nlancaster already won the thread, but anyway...

Rolling cart for easily moving it out to print and back to a tidy out of the way place.  Also has a shelf on bottom with a plastic bin for various goodies -- spare parts, grease, painter's tape, etc.

The cart includes a hex set holder, my caliper holder, and my "no gun" plaque.  I also keep a little pair of pliers for plucking the oozed ABS off the extruder.

The printer's mods include my enclosure system, Lawsy's MK4 head, glass bed held with binder clips, cable guide, Z-axis wobble nut hugger, filament guide, thumbscrews, and an electronics cover with two cooling fans.

This is my case, I've done a bit more to it since these photos though.

Re: Post your print station!

Here is my Workspace...it is essentially a 6' x 10' space at the back of my garage that used to be a cedar storage closet.  I installed a sliding glass door so I wouldn't feel claustrophobic...other than that, I have:

- Ceiling mounted exhaust fan
- Portable Air Conditioning Unit / Portable Heater
- Stock SD2 with wood / acrylic cover; top mounted spool / Glass Bed
- 700 Watt UPS for power "blinks"
- 40mm cooling fan on electronics with cover
- Running Solidworks, Netfabb studio, RH
- Baby monitor wireless camera

The other end of my space is a 3-axis mill and lathe...manual only; thinking of upgrading those to CNC at some point.

Cheers!

New Setup

New case can get to about 100°F and is so far only sealed with a weather strip on the inside of the door and held with a cabinet magnet.  I'm hoping to make it more efficient at retaining heat so that it can act as a heated chamber.  Lightyears better than the plexiglass one I used to use.

It's hard to tell, but the back wall is cut out to allow the back of the Solidoodle to be exposed to the room's temperature, and there is another seal around that to retain heat.  This allows the electronics to not get as hot as the rest of the machine.  I thought about just attaching the electronics to the box, but I want to still be able to remove the printer for mods.
