Topic: Poor Print Quality

Hi All,

I have an XYZ Da Vinci 1.0A with Repetier 0.93 Firmware and I just completed the Bowden E3d Mod from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1510425/comments

My issue is probably a more general 3D printing/settings question but I figured I'd ask here to start.

When printing a calibration cube with my new setup, the surface is extremely rough. Especially the corners of the cube (Image attached)

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=11322&download=0

Things I've tried:

Auto Tune PID

Extruder Step Calibration - Measure 100mm of filament and then Fed 100mm in Repetier host. This showed that the current step value is correct.

Manually leveled the bed twice

From what I've read, it looks like over-extrusion. Especially since I can sometimes see the nozzle scraping/nudging the previous layer. However, this doesn't make much sense since the calibration shows that my E-Steps are correct.

As I test, I printed several cubes at different flow rates. I went all the way down to 70% but didn't really see any difference in quality.

Printing with Black Hatchbox ABS @~220 C with 25% infill, 0.2mm layer height, and 60mm/s print speed

Repetier Cura settings are attached for both the Filament Settings and the Print Settings

Thank you

Re: Poor Print Quality

Try leaving the door open and set a fan to blow across the model while it is printing. My bet is the side the air is hitting will look much better. You need to look for or come up with a layer cooling solution. The fan in the hotend now is not for layer cooling but for cooling the hotend.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Poor Print Quality

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the suggestion, I can give that a try. I'm a little confused on the importance of layer cooling when printing ABS. A lot of people say you need an enclosure to keep the ambient temperature high, but then some others say you need a fan to cool the layers.

Was the original fan on the Da Vinci used to cool the print or the hotend?

One thing I have noticed,

If I print half the cube and then kill the print and immediately pull it off the bed, it is very soft. I can essentially squish the whole thing. Should I be able to do that or is it not cooling fast enough?

Try slowing the time between layers down if you can. The issue right now is that your print is staying too hot. To test this try printing two or three cubes at once. You will probably see a big improvement.

Re: Poor Print Quality

Hi Carl,

Earlier I did a print with lower print speeds which helped a little. Once my current print finishes I will try multiple cubes at once. I have a feeling this will help a lot by allowing the previous layer to cool.

If this is the issue then how do I go about fixing it? By adding a fan? Taking the door/walls off? Or is my bed temp too high (90C) ?

Re: Poor Print Quality

You could try slowing down but the best bet is to add a layer fan. Thingiverse has many that will fit the existing stock configuration. That machine just has poor air flow where it is needed.

Re: Poor Print Quality

Just tried printing 3 cubes far a part and it helped a lot:

Was thinking about using this layer fan with and modifying it to work with original Da Vinci fan:

Any thoughts? I picked this one since it seems to work with the E3D Bowden mod I'm using

Re: Poor Print Quality

Just an update, added the layer cooling fan and now things are looking much better!

Thanks Carl!
