Interesting, I still think the one that uses the smartphone for the recording is the best solution for me.  I signed up for 'more info' on this using the links you provided.

Re: Makerbot digitizer??

This is using the laserline/webcam method with what might be an auto rotating base but uses 2 mounted lasers.

scan 2-8 inch models in ~3 minutes. Automatically closes the model and creates a watertight file for 3d printing.

What are the chances that this will be open source?

Re: Makerbot digitizer??

I'm worried about it not exporting the scanned image to an open format but some proprietary makeware format.  But they wouldn't be that stupid would they?

Here is the scanning project that I am looking forward to:

This smartphone powered one has an expected release date of ~ March 18th from what I can gather.

This new scanner is far less impressive when you consider that I've had an Intricad scanner kit for a few years.
I no longer even need VRMesh to use it as it produces point clouds and you want mesh to close the object.
I've been handy with MeshLab (it's good enough for what I want).

Danger: 'Addams Family' sense of humor.
