Topic: what filament do you use and why

Hi everyone, I'm new here at soli forums. I'm really a student in 3d printing industry and just learning. I was just wondering what brand of filament you use, material type, and size etc.? What made you choose it and how much filament do you use (in kg) per month?

Kind regards,
Bruce

Re: what filament do you use and why

I personally use Octave almost exclusively.
*It's cheap...about $30 +/- on Amazon
*Very consistent diameter
*Color holds roughly the same hue after extrusion. Some brands change drastically to a duller tone

I have compared between 5 other brands, Octave is the one I am set on.
The amount of filament a user goes through all depends on how much they print, and how large the models are, how much infill, whether or not support is needed, the whole deal all depends. In my case, I go through about 1 spool per month on average.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: what filament do you use and why

Thank you for your input Azerate. Yes, Ive seen Octave looks like nice filament. Anyone tried the generic brands? They're a lot cheaper too, but I'd imagine the quality is bad.

1kg spool a month, is that the average for most people? I thought for the average user it would last time easily 4-6 months. Would you mind sharing your prints?

Kind regards,
Bruce

There are quite a few threads in the Filament section giving (sometimes brutally) honest reviews. Nine times out of ten, if it seems too good to be true...well, you know smile

Meh. All depends from user to user. I print a lot of replacement and upgraded parts as well as designs I've made, stuff for my daughter, blah blah blah. Point is, if I am home, my printer is usually humming along. Some users like to print very small and would therefore not go through as much filament in a month. But since I print large items, I go through more material....this is also a kick in the teeth if I get a few failed prints.

You could research a Filastruder...cheapest Filament you could come across if you know what you are doing, and you could also recycle your failed prints and unwanted scraps.

Brand  color fab from Printed solid  some  Printed solid rolls. Miro center  rolls for $20 a kilo not sure they tell you what brand  FYI current price  $14.99 a kilo.
Material Type I use PLA only so far. I do have a roll of Colorfab XT  for special jobs yet to come . I do not do ABS as I am on asthma meds do not want to  even risk the fumes in my house.
I chose to purchase from printed solid based on recommendation from a friend. and location.
Mirocenter based on price and location .

Size will depend on the printer /extruder on the printer.  so buy what fits the printer.

I have had my printer about 10 weeks and probably have used less than a kilo. Hard to day I am using of several rolls.

The rule of thumb is a kilo a month based on a print a day of average size. but this is an estimate only . How can one know  the size and quantity of prints.

also PLA needs the new larger nozzle extruders and cooling considerations for best stick/print

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: what filament do you use and why

Well I haven't had a printer for long but all I will be using is PLA since the printer is set up in my lab at work and I don't want to deal with building a scrubber for the fumes.  In the last week that I have had the printer up I have used about 1kg of filament and plan to have my printer going gangbusters all of the time.  I have a 52 hour print running right now.  As for the manufacturer I will be using filament produced by my very own extruder thanks to the brilliant minds Filastruder. smile

If you build it they will come. Then they will make fun of it, tell you it's not worth doing and go home and try to copy you.

Re: what filament do you use and why

There is so many reason why you're using that brand filament.
After all different people have different needs.  So it is hard to say.
Some people just want cheaper filament, while other enjoying high quality filament.
It really depends on what you're doing.

I personally like a well balanced filament.
- well consistency in diameter for each spool
- Color consistency between spool
- Safety of material (any compounds are added)
- Calibration
- Maintenance
- service
- price

I 'm sure there is a right right filament for everyone.  Enjoy Printing smile

Re: what filament do you use and why

I have a xyz davinci 1.0 and and have tried many brands, looking for the best quality ABS 1.75mm I can find, that works well on the davinci.
So far my pick is a filament made by siridi,
They use top grade USA raw material. So I decided to buy a bunch and start selling it. Florida-filaments.com
I find it to work well on the xyz da vinci, not sure how it does on other machines.

Re: what filament do you use and why

I use Push Plastic (www.pushplastic.com) out of Arkansas.  1kg of PLA or ABS is $29 including shipping, which has always been very quick.

Their filament is highly consistent from reel to reel, both in diameter and thermal properties.  I don't even measure a new spool any more to check the extrusion ratio; I just feed it in, and it works.

Although they seem to be a smaller company, they keep expanding their offerings.  Their customer support has been very good.  I had a question regarding some PLA I ordered, and they were very responsive and helpful.

Guess its sad this is the 1st I've heard of them considering their that close to me.
Ordered one of their sample packs. We'll see.  I've mostly been using sainsmart ABS.

Push Plastic has a nice site.  Good selection of PLA.  I'm going to need to give them a try.

Re: what filament do you use and why

Ive used allot of ic3d filament,  with good results. Size has  been pretty consistent, good layer bonding. Best of all is the price and amazon prime availability

I use www.makergeek.com They have literally every filament on the market

I must second IC3D.  I've been printing with it since I got my first 3D printer last year.   The stuff comes sealed with dessicant, in a nice box, and I've never had any issues with it.

They suggested a temperature of 230 degrees C for the print head, did you adjust your?

Re: what filament do you use and why

I like ABS because it can be treated with acetone to get a smooth finish. There was an outfit on Amazon some months back that was selling 1 kg spools of GBB filament for $9.99 with free shipping. I love a bargain so stocked up at that price. The regular price is $21.99 and up depending on the color. Why the color would make any difference in price I don't know, but I suspect they drop the price on whatever they have the most of in stock. I've used several spools so far and it seems to work fine. I've also used SainSmart filament, which as I remember runs around $28 and haven't had any problems with it.
