Topic: Sanguinololu alternative?

I've had my SD3 for a couple years now and have replaced or upgraded almost all of the electronic and mechanical components. The only things left to upgrade are the platform and the sanguinololu board.

What are my options for alternative boards, and what do people recommend? I find the board just can't handle and distribute voltage consistently and evenly. By the looks of things, Solidoodle have upgraded these parts in later versions (SD4, workbench, etc).

A RUMBA is your best option.

Re: Sanguinololu alternative?

Do I just need to purchase the board of do I need any additional bits?

Also, I have 2 additional fans, and an uprated bed heater. And out of curiosity, does the rumba have the necessary connections already there for an LED screen and maybe an SD card slot to run prints standalone?

Re: Sanguinololu alternative?

The rumba board can handle everything. It's made for that. It's why it's the best out. There's also a lot of documentation to help you connect your led screen and card reader. If you need additional help feel free to pm me

Re: Sanguinololu alternative?

Where do you buy a Rumba board? I'm great at using a mill and lathe and building cars and motorcycles, buy I need a step by step spoon feeding with some support. My SD 3 motherboard went bad yesterday and I need to get it running last week, so to speak.

I bought my RUMBA from here and it works just fine. They are local (North America) compared to shipping from China through RepRapDiscount.....which show the RUMBA as currently unavailable.
As for instructions, there is a comprehensive thread here on the forum.
The hardest part of the RUMBA is reworking your wire terminals since the plugs SD uses will not work. If you buy the full kit, it should come with Pololou style terminals which are the bee's knees!

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

What is the link to the thread, I'm getting my board in the next couple of days.

SD4 with E3D V6.

Re: Sanguinololu alternative?

Third day with no response to several voice messages and a one sided email that I have been sending to Solidoodle...I see why the clone of the SD 2 is so popular at $400 shipped from California from Geeetech. It will arrive Monday...probably before I get a response from Solidoodle...

I design, prototype an manufacture...and then sell and offer phone support...my own line of www.ExpensiveLightweightStuff.com and have been doing so for twenty five years next April. It's me and my wife and an occasional motorcycle school intern, we don't have a problem with it all.

So, I ask, what the hell? Solidoodle could have the entire 3D printer market to themselves if they'd get off their butt and answer the phone/email, no?

I am SO disappointed!

This is very off topic, but considering the comment, I would recommend paying attention to this thread since it may give you some observation to your current situation. Fast does not always mean quality, but poor customer service is a slap in the face.

Thanks.
Geeetech makes about a dozen different kits and such. I bought the SD2 clone. My SD3 has never been right since I bought it, and I finally got it working well then the motherboard went out...again...turns out the intermittent issues I had since day one were because of the board, which they have update and discontinued....so I have ordered a replacement from China, where the original crappy one came from.

Geetech customer service?? CAN'T be any worse than Solidoodle. Everything in the SD3 but the 3D printed components comes from China, so what's the difference? All the replacement parts from the SD2 Clone are available on Amazon and with Amazon Prime, they'll be in my paws before Solidoodle answers their email. At least Linda from the San Leandro CA distributor answers my friggin' email and she's pleasant to deal with so far.

Fourth day, still no email/phone return from SD.

Again, Solidoodle could rule the planet's 3D printer needs...but...

Re: Sanguinololu alternative?

...but Geeetech has a solid track record of failing components. I am by no means supporting how SD has been conducting customer service. But from my (and others) experience from China based companies, be prepared for:
*NO support
*Terrible english should you get a response
*Have I mentioned failing components?
*Little to no firsthand experience in the SF community

I am interested to see how this holds up as an owner of 3 SD2s and I hope it works out for you, but I cringe at the more than likely potential experience given my track record alone on 1 of 5 functioning stepper drivers.

All aside, can we please move this conversation to a separate thread? This OP was on a completely separate topic than Geeetech or SD bashing. smile

Re: Sanguinololu alternative?

Again, they both used probably the same vendors, and everything is available on Amazon.

About 30 hours on my SD3 and it no longer functions.

Sorry, I'm just frustrated...had a stroke 2 months ago and I'm still running my biz, creating new products and learning how to walk and tie my shoes again....what's their excuse?

Thank you, it is the toughest thing I have ever done. Got home from the hospital, I could not hold a sheet of copy paper.
Had to learn to tie shoes, write and eat again. Am walking 1.5-2 mils a night now, I look like a Special Olympics athlete...but I get better each day!

Cheers,
KWICK
