Topic: Cancel Press order while I still can?

Heya everyone,

I ordered a Press during the pre-sale as well, and since I'm in the 28xxx group it has yet to ship.

Now, returning it once I have it would be tricky, since I'm overseas in Europe, and shipping back to the US and trying to get back the import taxes etc. might get difficult, so if I want to change my mind, I gotta do it now, before it ships.

Thing is… this would be my first 3D printer, ever. I have basically NO experience with them at all, and I don't have a huge workshop at home to tinker with it to my heart's content – I too fell for the Plug&Play usability they advertised it with. I don't have a problem with tinkering a little, but I don't want to have to take it apart and rebuild it multiple times, maybe create new parts, before I even get to printing my first parts.

So with all the problems people are reportedly having with the Press, currently, would I be better off cancelling and going for a daVinci or so? The Press, with shipping and import taxes comes out to only slightly less for me than I'd pay for a daVinci shipped from here in Germany, for example. Would I have better luck with that (or, would my chances to get a functional printer at least be higher)?

Thanks a lot, cheers everyone,

Runo

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

well at present people seem angry at me on the forum for giving the press a bashing. I personally would look at the printbot simple metal for a couple of reasons.

1)they are always innovating and releasing upgrade kits for the printer

2)the printer is expandable and very easy to mod

3) large community support base

4) the design is very simple

5) proven through over a years field use from users to be a decent printer

you are sacrificing 2" cube of build volume though as it only comes in 6" and if you want to save some money you can buy it in kit form.

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

Hmm, I would really like to have at least 8 inches of build space available in at least 2 dimensions… =/ That was actually one of the reasons I originally went for the Press.

Thanks anyways!

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

if your going to be predominatly printing in ABS i would rethink the idea your going to be printing 8" cubed parts. They will warp and the build will fail ( i say this realising the skill level you said you were at)

Look at the robo 3d printer.

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

It might make sense to find something a little more local.  If you are unhappy with it you'll be able to return it easily.  If you decide to keep your Press take the time to follow the issues people are having so you can decide if they are something you can fix.
It would seem the biggest issues are with the auto leveling and some minor wire routing issues.
If you know this going in you'll realize these are fairly simple things to fix or work around.
There are also options on the software side of things that can improve your odds.
I think that mechanically the Press is a fairly decent platform.
It is a difficult decision and the outcome really depends on your expectations.

Thanks to all for your contributions

id say thats the best advise your gonna get :-) after cooling down a bit i think a lot of people are pissed off from the delays so issues are getting magnified. I'm guilty as the rest of 'em. I think see how it is after a week once all the people doing unboxing videos start doing first print video's.

Also an important factor is to see what the printer can do once people get it working fully with RH and simplify3d

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

If I forget the fact that I had to wait almost 5 months for the printer, I'm perfectly happy.

It was a perfect first 3D printer for me.

I live in an apartment, so I have limited space/tools to work on it as well, but I haven't had any issues that I couldn't take care of.

But if you think that you'll be unhappy, then cancel it.

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

First, let me say thanks for all your answers so far!

omaha: That does look pretty cool, but at double the price of the Press/daVinci after including the shipping, it's a little out of my price range currently.

wardjr: Thanks a lot, that puts the issues a little in perspective. Right now it just reads as if the machine doesn't work at all, and this frightened me a little, with people talking about stuff like the extruder's gears and motor being to weak, leading to filament not being fed into the hotent and how they took it apart several times to try and fix it and nothing worked and so on. This is just stuff that I wouldn't know how to and really also wouldn't want to attempt to fix, at least not right in the beginning. I'm still not sure if I'm comfortable with this, but I don't suppose my printer will ship within the coming week, so maybe I should hold out so long and see how all this progresses.

proctor_richard: Yep. I'm not really pissed about the delays; sure, they're nothing anyone likes, but hell, if that had meant a flawless product, alright with me. The multitude of issues that people currently seem to face is what concerns me. But yeah, like I wrote above, let's see what the next few days bring. Maybe (hopefully, but I'm kinda doubtful currently) some solidoodle employees might chime in as well and help people fix the issues.

mangels09: That's good to hear! I'm in the same boat as you – appartment, no real workshop, just a working room with a few non-power tools, a soldering iron and a dremel, etc, but nowhere to really take something apart and repair it.
I don't really *think* I'll be unhappy, I'm just unsure if I'll be able to handle the potential issues.

So far from my side for now, cheers everyone!

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

Thought I'd drop in on this and give my 2 cents.

The SD Press is my first 3D printer. I bought into the plug-and-play idea and low cost. I was pretty sure going into this that it wasn't going to be true plug-and-play due to all of the complexities and variables in 3D printing.

Over the past few days I've had a lot of failed prints and puzzling problems but I've finally completed a couple of prints and have learned a lot in the way.

Initially I had issues with the extruder getting stuck and easily solved that problem when I realized the wiring was blocking its path. Easy fix. I then had issues with the extruder running into the build plate. Again after watching what was happening I found that on some occasions the trigger for the bed height wasn't dropping. Since it only drops in a certain location, I found that as long as I home x and y then it is certain to drop when it starts.

With those problems solved it was on to printing. But the filament wasn't sticking to the plate. I had thought it had to do with temperatures but being new wasn't sure. I found out that the glass needed something to help it stick. Some Elmers glue worked perfectly.

Back to printing. Now I'm hearing knocking around the extruder and prints are poor. I watched the drive wheel and saw it slipping and the filament wasn't always advancing. Looking closer I saw a set screw so I thought I'd check how tight it was. It was loose. Tighten it up and now the filament is advancing nicely.

Printing again! 1 hour into a large but simple print I saw the extruder to high and no filament coming out. It's a jam. This one was a little difficult to troubleshoot but after a few failures and reading through the forum I found that opening the lid and removing the cover from the extruder should help. Done.

I finished a 4 hour print today with no problems and all the previous problems that I had were solved with a little patience and examination. No problems required me disassemble the printer or do major surgery on the printer.

While I'm a little disappointed that it took me several days to get a full print, it was worth it to understand the printer a little more. I still have a lot to learn about 3D printing in general but this has been a rewarding experience.

So, should you cancel your order because of the issues that you've read about here and because you don't have experience or a giant workshop? In my opinion, no. Take the problems you may or may not run into and turn them into learning experiences. If you are serious about 3D printing use this printer to learn as much as you can about how it works.

Sorry for the long post. I hope I've help put this in perspective for you or others.

Re: Cancel Press order while I still can?

If you got it during the pre-sale I'd say keep it. For the price you get 8x8x8, heated bed, auto calibration, decent print quality, and a great community on this forum. I would not buy this printer for $600 (which is really $700 because Solicare is pretty much a must with this thing)

I'm a little annoyed that they only let you buy Solicare when you purchased the printer... It seems like they should offer it any time during the 60-day warranty.  I know I'd consider buying it at this point, but it's too late.

Same.  I didn't realize the option was there, I must have missed it when I ordered.  Can't really recall for sure, it was back in May. smile

I just checked the site - when you go through the checkout process, does it not ask you about solicare?  I see that it's on the main Press page, but once you start going through the actual checkout, is it not suggested or offered?
