For science!

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

Pretty short and to the point article. At the end, they mention a new idea they have for a lunar base. Awesome.

Thanks for the link to that article.  I'd heard they had a 3D printer on the space station, but to actually use it as a 3D "Fax" machine is great!  The Apollo 13 mission could have definitely used this.

Another article on the print. I find it hard to believe they did not have a ratcheting socket wrench on the ISS.

I'm sure they had one, probably just not that size. Look how short the handle is.

Also he's gonna have a bad time if he thinks he can use that thing to tighten a bolt.

Agree, I feel like this is basically an expensive novelty when you know the limited capabilities of FDM printed parts.

It does not mentione what material they printed with, I assume PLA? But the brittleness of it..did it work?

I believe it is actually being sent to NASA for inspection....but all articles I've read since the print either said what everyone knows, or were shadily worded on the results.

Well I'm sure it can meet the documented spec (3 in-lb) but that is a pretty  small amount of torque.  I originally thought maybe it was a torque wrench but after seeing the dis-assembly on another forum it is clear it is just a racheting socket driver.  So maybe Nasa added the 3 in-lb label before releasing to the public to be sure expectations are not too high - it *is* a rather large font...
