Topic: brand new davinci 1.0 printing problems

Up till now I've had 2 different complex prints that failed miserably. Attached are pictures of the one from last night-about 2 hours in. At first i thought it was the aftermarket filament binding on the spool carrier...i believe that's what happened to my first failed print. However this time the filament was moving freely.

Anyone experience something like this? Solution?

Try to auto level the bed and see what happens. Did you use glue?

Re: brand new davinci 1.0 printing problems

I always level before large prints.  I also always cake on the gluestick too.  It was level - at least according to the printer.  I watched the first 1/2 hour - the plastic laid down perfectly for the first few levels before I went to bed.

I forgot to mention I own a 2.0 as well.  The bed heats to 70C, and seems to have my ABS prints stick very well to it.
This new 1.0 (1.0.1 firmware) heats to 90C.  The differences I notice is the parts are easily removed after cool down.

I am wondering if this 90C temperature is normal amoungst 1.0 models?
Does it look like the plastic is detaching from the bed in places?  Maybe even curling upwards?  I don't think 90C should be too hot...

I think I'll measure the temperature of the bed - perhaps it's going way too high.

Short prints (1 hour) print just fine.

Re: brand new davinci 1.0 printing problems

First I would not trust the auto-leveling. It never really worked for me, so I just usually started a print and just eyeballed the spacing while printing and just looked at how the extruder was placing the plastic down. Also I see it is slightly burned. Do you print solid?. I know in my experience I have only gotten this effect when a piece of my print broke free from the glass plate or it began warping. I think it might be slightly not sticking. Yes 90C is normal for the 1.0. For solutions I would try: 1. I would take a knife blade of sharp object and clean the plate clean after each print and they reapply a generous amount of glue for the next print. 2. If you are printing solid I would try infill (sometimes ABS does not dry fast and is still semi-solidified) for the next layer 3. I would see if your extruder is too close to the bed (should be about the thickness of 1 business card) 4. Try to use slic3r to slice you objects/ increase and decrease print speed (http://www.soliforum.com/topic/6279/xyz … 0-hacking/) P.S.: i am not an expert, i am only telling from experience. If you tell me more details I might be able to help

Re: brand new davinci 1.0 printing problems

I don't have enough experience to adjust the bed whilst printing.  I adjusted using a piece of paper and was able to get it pretty well leveling.  I then performed an auto level which indicated it was way off - not all 3 numbers equally.  It was all over the extremes. Very frustrating.
I have each time wiped the bed down with hot water, thoroughly cleaned it all off, dried, and reapplied liberally the UHU glue all over the bed when cold.  Yes, I do squidgy with a long stiff xacto knife.
Yes, in a few cases I was printing 90% infill.  I tried again last night - after 12 hours of printing 90% infill small objects (gears and such) it was an absolute shocker when i opened the cabinet. See the first picture.
Then I figured I'd try just a few gear objects.  This time it printed properly, but the gears are bowed in the middle. Unusable.  The printed out close to perfect on my stock davinci 2.0. I dont have a camera that takes macro shots, so I cant show.
Finally I printed this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:495259/#files  at 15% infill, fast speed at .4mm height.  See picture2.
I'm getting p!ssed off with this good for nothing printer.  Why did my 2.0 work so much better than this?
I'm considering to take it back.
I thought I was getting a good deal for $399, but not it doesnt print.

You are doing it wrong or should I say backwards. Use auto level to get a passing result. It does not matter the values as long as it passes. Then start a sample print. Right when the head moves over the plate and starts the purge line, turn off the power. While the unit is still hot go back to the piece of paper and adjust it so the paper just catches under the nozzle on all three points. After you do that move the head to the home position by hand and never ever run auto level again. if you feel you must adjust it the use the print, power, paper method. This procedure is outlined thoroughly in the sticky at the top of this section. The auto level feature is just broken on this machine and it is better to not use it.

It looks like you might also be trying to print too fast for your settings. I assume you are using the stock Host software. if so then you should print slow for finer detail. In fact you should print slow for normal as well. Only use fast when setting for rough.
