Topic: From Thingiverse To Da Vinci

Hello all,

I bought a Da Vinci 1.0 and after calibration I managed to print the pre loaded vase and key chain perfectly. I am also printing a Spider Man logo as I type this which was downloaded from the XYZ gallery.

Now this Spider Man logo seems to be printing fine, but if I download a STL file from Thingiverse the size seems in correct and even if I increase the dimension in XYZware it doesn't print correctly..the filament didn't even touch the bed.

Now I read somewhere about having to resize the drawing within the STL file to mm or having to perform some sort of conversion before re-saving the file and sending it to the printer?

I use Sketchup and XYZware, if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: From Thingiverse To Da Vinci

I sometimes have to run files from Thingiverse through Slic3r to fix errors before exporting to gcode, and copying over a sample file on the printer's SD card. Or save it back to stl and try sending via XYZware.

Thanks for the reply.

I have Slic3r, does it fix the file automatically just by opening it? Also, do you have to do any type of conversion with the measurements?

Sorry, is gcode the file format the Da Vinci uses?

Re: From Thingiverse To Da Vinci

The DaVinci uses gcode, but it has to be modified in order for the da vinci to use it.  I looked into modding it manually, but gave up.  There is a modded version of XYZware that will do all the work for you, and if you are on firmware 1.1H, won't even deduct the amount of filament from your cartridge.  I have an extensive thread here http://www.soliforum.com/topic/8122/pro … lue-stick/ that I have posted all my trials, tribulations, and findings, including a link to the modded XYZware I am using.  I am warning you, its big, but worth the read.

Thingiverse does not check if the models are good to print because I believe the makerbots software fixes those issues itself. I use cloud.netfabb.com which was recently purchased by microsoft(so of course now you need a login) still it's an excellent service with which I have never had an issue.

I edit my posts a lot.

Is the cloud netfabb a Pro version ? I have the Basic and alot of good features unavailable.

I'll certainly have a look.

Not sure if I would want to stop it reading the filament amount left, as I am not too interested in using non XYZ cartridges for now. Knowing how much filament used may actually help me when looking at costs. Saying that, XYZware does estimate how much is going to be used.

I will stick with the basics for now though as I am a newbie.

Ok, so let me get this straight.

Download STL from Thingiverse.
Upload to cloud.netfabb.com to fix the file.
Open in XYZware.
Print.

?

Am I saving it as a STL when it is fixed via cloud.netfabb.com?

EDIT: Just repaired a file and it saves it as XYZware File Association 1 (.stl). Now this model is really small when opened up in XYZware. It shows dimensions: X - 19.14mm, Y - 15.85mm - Z - 4.76

Can I simply open XYZware, click scale and then simply increase the size as I see fit and then send to the printer?

Yes. I've done this on a number of my own prints to fix size.

Re: From Thingiverse To Da Vinci

Thank you for the reply.

Seems like some of the models needed repairing first or had some other issue. I have printed plenty from Thingiverse without issue now.
