Re: 1st printer buy... is it hard to build a printer?

Sealover I have been researching 3d printers for about 5 months so I am not an expert. but.
One of the things I found was you can source most of the parts for around $ 300 but building your own you still need to build aflame or a box. easy for me I am an experienced welder.  and you need to configure all the firmware settings to the printer you build.
Many 3d printers the sodidoodles included are built with 3d printed parts so you need a 3d printer or you buy the parts.
I considered the home build route, I have built converted a couple small cnc machines . but decided I wanted more to learn to use and print than spend the time and money  learning to build one.
design software depends on what you are planning to design.
Blender  is probably great for surface and artistic stuff.
for mechanical design Architecture or marine look at free cad.
OS cad is nice for programmers.
If you do not mind spending a couple dollars  look at the cubify  software. I uses and liked the grandfather of these products Alibre cad  these are not free $49 to $199 depending on the product but you can use for free for two weeks.
for control software repetier host seems to be the most popular and it comes with slic3r and cura  skeinforge can be dowloaded as well.

Good luck in your search.

Re: 1st printer buy... is it hard to build a printer?

If it was me, I would buy my 1st one then once you learn what you like and dislike plus the experience you gain, then you could build your own with the features you want.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

+1
Also, it is VERY handy to have a running printer available as you will find it necessary to design and print various brackets, switch holders, etc. to complete the build (if you are building from scratch and not using a kit).

SD2 - Stock - Enclosure - Heated Bed - Glass Plate - Auto Fire Extinguisher
Ord Bot Hadron - RAMPS 1.4 - Bulldog XL - E3D v6 - 10" x 10" PCB Heated Build w/SSR - Glass Plate
Thanks for All of Your Help!

cheers guys yes I think I will be buying a ready made printer and learn about them from there, software wise my 1st project I wanted to make myself a Samsung note 2 phone cover with a skull on the back seen a few iphone ones about and they look quite cool always likes the iPhone cover that has the moving cogs/sprockets on the back but thinking maybe I should learn to walk before I can run lol

how would you go about getting the size correct when making a phone cover??

added some photos so you can sort of see what I mean

Use a good calipers and then it's trial and error from there.
Before you get to that point you are going to want to print some calibration cubes and circles.  That would be a little bit more like "walking before you run" wink  You'll be running around saying "Hey everybody look at this really cool cylinder I printed" big_smile

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL
Thanks to all for your contributions

That is kind of the path I am on I thought about a scratch build decided I really din not know where to start and did not want to put all my energy into R $ D  . so I set a dollar limit and got what was closest to what I though I wanted at a price under my limit.
So just need to figure out what to do for the next printer.
