i hate stratasys and their methods of patent troll...
*remove all my STL from thingiverse*
That is going to make things interesting.
Maybe Replicator 3XXX will have an actively heated build chamber and an all metal hot end.
This is an interesting move on Stratasys' part.
Their main competitor has always been 3DSystems (in terms of proprietary, high end, high quality printers, as I'm sure you all know). When 3D Systems came out with the Cube, that changed the game. They started to break into the low-end market, and now they have several products that compete with the open-source printers that are generating so much profit.
I knew either 3DSystems or Stratasys was going to snatch up Makerbot as soon as they started talking about selling the company, but it was just a matter of who got there first. If Stratasys did, they could stay competitive. If 3DSystems absorbed them, they'd have locked up the low-end market, and that would have been the kiss of death for Stratasys.
I would hope they don't move the Makerbot machines to custom filament systems.
I hope they dont put a price on thingiverse, yet that is bound to change
Was at the MD&D expo in Phili today and saw one of the Stratasys filament-based machines using ABS. I found it interesting that the gap between the extruder nozzle and work piece was much higher than it typically is with my SD3. It was almost like the filament was coming out and falling a mm or so into place. The prints were beautiful. They weren't $35,000 beautiful (price tag on printer) but very nice. I'm not sure if this was due to a higher extrusion temperature, heated build chamber, optimized slicing software or a combination of all of the a above.
Re the $400 MM for Makerbot, its hard to know if that is a good long term investment With the keys to the kingdom being available to so many from just the knowledge shared on this forum. Who knows though, maybe they'll sell 300,000 units and recoup their investment in a few years......
Like it or not, Makerbot has become synonymous with the evolution of the reprap. When I go to manufacturing shows and mention to the 3dsystems or stratasys or objet people that I have one of these at home, they all say oh you have a makerbot. Or if I say I have a solidoodle at home they say is that like a makerbot clone? So even though stratasys could have built a better mousetrap for home users than makerbot ever could, they are buying the name and the reputation and hitting the ground running.
I hadn't thought about the thingiverse connection, now I'm worried that it's going to change. Although you can't go a week without some other file hosting webservice popping up for STL files.
It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

Can't find it right now, but I've seen a screen capture of one of Bre's tweets the past few days on one of the news service wrapup and it specifically mentioned a thing about thingiverse from one of Bre's tweets - His stated that;
"Thingiverse WONT change" ....
Now - Bre being Bre - there may well already be a course of action to do something and what he really means is that course of action will continue... Or it could mean what it says, which is, Thingiverse wont change....
The gamble here is does he mean the former or the latter
I don't have anything on thingiverse that I hadn't intended on giving away already but I don't like the thought of it being controlled by corporate overlords (any more than it is now) I still don't want all my base are belong to them. (hopefully someone gets that line)

I'm with you on thingiverse Zero winger eh' LOL
I see this as a pretty big advantage for consumer 3D printing. Let's just hope they don't try to grow too big too fast.
