Topic: Time until no metal shavings?

At this very moment I'm doing my first print with home made filament, thanks to the Filastruder!  I've been cranking out filament and probably have made about 1.5lbs by now.  While I'm getting better at making it a consistent width (raising the Filastruder helped, thanks Tim), I'm still finding metal shavings in my filament.  I've been using a magnifying glass and back-light to look for surface and embedded shavings.  I find small surface shavings randomly, but probably about 1 per meter, and larger embedded shavings about 1 per 4 meters.

Is this normal?  I'm well past the 6 hours estimated in the instructions (probably closer to 10-12).  I find shavings on different parts of the filament and it doesn't appear to be periodic (e.g. every X cm), so I've interpreted it as random shavings that are still being picked up.  The inside of the pipe certainly wasn't smooth.  Thanks!

Re: Time until no metal shavings?

It's okay that the inside of the pipe isn't smooth. It actually can't be too smooth, or you'll get no output (COF of polymer-wall must be greater than COF of polymer-feedscrew).

Did you check that the auger spins freely in the barrel?

Did you over tighten/bend the barrel by chance?

1 shaving per meter is not good. I don't see anything like that. Usually after a pound or so of pellets, I'm cleaned out.

somethings not right at 1 shaving per meter.

-Did you grind the lips on the pipe nipple?
-double check that this is not an issue http://www.soliforum.com/topic/2651/wor … tightness/
