Topic: Word of Warning - Barrel Tightness

My Beta v2 Filastruder would never completely clean out.  There would still be filings showing up every few inches, no matter how long it had run, and every now and then it would make a groaning sound, like the auger was dragging on the pipe.  I took it apart to clean it out after trying coloring with powdered pigment, and found out the source of the contamination-

So when screwing on the nipple, be careful not to twist it too hard because you can bend it just enough to cause a problem without being able to see that it's bent.  It's a bit of a dilemma, because if it isn't tight, it might rotate and turn the hopper opening sideways.  So it is probably best to get it mostly tight, and then accept that the auger will twist it more and force you to turn the flange back 90 degrees.

Re: Word of Warning - Barrel Tightness

This is why I recommend ensuring the auger rotates freely in the assembled nipple/flange before installing. It's also a good idea to only tighten it on cold side of the cutout.

You don't need more than 15 ft-lbs when tightening, as the motor can't produce more than that.

Also, try a spritz of WD-40 or similar on the thrust bearing area - I bet the groan goes away, unless it's a different groan than I've heard.

Re: Word of Warning - Barrel Tightness

I used a rubber wrench to make the flange tight.  Will check for the bent pipe issue when I take mine apart.

Re: Word of Warning - Barrel Tightness

I always wondered whether this was my issue with the v1 contaminates.

Another word of warning...dropping you auger will likely bend it (ask me how I found that out) causing similar issues.
