Topic: Issues with construction of Filastruder

I recently received my new Filastruder, and have got it mostly put together. However, I've had several issues with the tolerances. The first was that one of the holes on the pipe flange was too small, and while trying to get the bolt through, it squashed the threading. This means that the extrusion barrel is mounted with only 3 bolts. As well as this, the acrylic case doesn't line up properly, making it very difficult for me to put the bolts through to secure the acrylic plates in place. This is likely a result of the barrel mounting issue. While these issues did give me considerably trouble for a while, I've managed to remedy them for the most part. Any assistance would be welcome smile

The holes in the flange are 1/4" clearance fit, there should be no trouble getting a bolt through...I'm really puzzled as to what's going on here. Can you get in touch with support directly by using the contact form on the Filastruder website, please?

Re: Issues with construction of Filastruder

Having recently received mine, I can attest to the the flange tolerances being rubbish in general.  The bolt holes in it have a sharp edge that likes to catch on the thread and they're out of round - running a 17/64 drill bit through each helps.  The threads are also not cut square, resulting in your pipe nipple (the "barrel") being canted at an angle which can require you to shim the flange to get it to line up with the motor or not bind.  I had to go to the hardware store and dig through the bin of flanges until I found one that was close to square.

The acrylic case is laser cut and should be pretty good.  I didn't have any issues with mine, other than receiving one piece that was broken and having a piece break (near the switch) during assembly.  Acrylic is pretty brittle stuff - if you force it, it'll snap.

Right, I've sent them an email.

Re: Issues with construction of Filastruder

I really wish Filastruder would take more care in the iron pipe flange. I also found the flange to be a huge pain in the butt because it did not align with the motor, so the rotation would not be constant speed, but slip periodically because of the loose fit of the hex socket.
I’m on my way to a metal workshop to square the flange on a lathe. I know it is a DIY project, but I don’t think it should be a neccesary step to whip out the big equipment or replace parts.

Nothing should slip, nor be misaligned. Most likely it is a problem with assembly, for instance the acrylic spacers are slightly varying in thickness so one can arrange them to ensure the barrel is perpendicular to the chassis. Additionally, the mounting holes have a bit of play so that the motor can be aligned with the auger. Similarly with the hex socket, a loose fit is ideal to allow for misalignment, but if it is slipping them something I wrong.

If you have trouble with the assembly, just drop us a line through the support email, happy to help including replacing parts if needed.
