Topic: hey hey

I was just given a solidoodle i think two or three....  does not matter anyway.

Im super pumped up to get this thing going to see if im really interested in printing, but i cant find the software for the printer.  the wiki appears to be broken and simple internet searching does not appear to turn anything useful up.  I'm sure im just missing it... any and all help is appreciated.  I know like zero about printing.

I think you need three programs.  one for the printer, one to do slicing and one to create your items you'd like to print... there might be a fourth... like a program to turn your created files into solid objects.

anyway... plugging in the printer just locks up my computer and shuts it down...  so im guessing you need that printer software installed before plugging it in via usb...

thanks again... i hope this forum is still active

Re: hey hey

The only software needed to 'connect' the printer to the computer is a simple USB driver.  If your computer doesn't automatically recognize the printer, I may still have a simple USB driver somewhere.  You can go to Repetier (dot) com and get the free printer slicing software, one of many - allows you to set the protocols for printing - heat, speed, filament, etc.  With a Google search you will find quite a few software packages, a lot for free, some for money.

Software for designing and converting to a printable file can be downloaded for free - search this board for design software - or you can go with things like Solidworks for about 4000.00. There are no standards, your choice and knowledge level.  Sites like Thingiverse, and Yeggi have literally hundreds of thousands of free printable files to download.

Your electrical problem can be solved here also, but be ready to take and post pictures of the board and wiring.  I know a little, there are some folks here that know a lot, and are willing to share and help.  But it will take time and some effort on your part.  Don't be afraid to ask - there are no dumb questions.  Most everyone on this board started out not knowing a whole lot.  Most new printers still come with little or no documentation.

I have a Solidoodle 2, been heavily modified, and works fine, and it's 5 years old.

Welcome and jump in...

Re: hey hey

I have several SD4's. Repeiter software will be the best for operating your printer in the beginning. Slic3r comes with repeiter or you can download a standalone version.

Sd4 #9080 with a glass bed. E3d chimera duel extruder. Paste extruder , duet wifi.
Lawsy carriages. linear bearings. Y axis direct drive, Kinect scanner
SD4#8188 glass bed, lawsly carriages, E3d v6, octoprint http://www.ustream.tv/channel/hotrod96z28
Filastruder/filawinder, Custom Delta 300mm x 600mm

Re: hey hey

your computer may, or may not (most likely not) install the correct driver for the printer. You will most likely need to install it manually.

What driver you will need kind of depends on what specific model printer you actually have. To help further we will need to know this as the different models have different controller boards which will dictate what driver you need.

But as mentioned - Repetier Host is all you really "need" to download once you can successfully connect the printer to the computer.
Repetier Host comes bundled with both Slic3r and Cura - most of us here prefer Slic3r

SD4 #1 & #2 - Lawsy carriages, E3D v6, Rumba controller board, mirror bed plate, X motor fan, upgraded PSU & Mica bed heater
SD4 #3 - in the works ~ Folgertech FT-5, rev 1
Printit Industries Beta Tester - Horizon H1

Re: hey hey

Plugging in the printer just locks up your computer and shuts it down is not a good sign, something more than USB driver missing is going on. Unplug the printer from USB port and restart the computer, make sure computer is still functional and the USB port you used still function. If it is, try plug the printer to different computer and see if it happens on any computer it plugging in.

Re: hey hey

SD2, huh? so 150mm x150mm bed (or 6" x 6") - that should have the good old sang board.. a pic of the controller board would verify that.

also, what "type" of computer are you trying to connect to? Win7, Win10, Mac, Linux?

Re: hey hey

I'd like a little help if anyone is still reading this....  i must know zero about drivers because i cannot seem to find a driver for the sanguinololu, like at all...

if you have a install tutorial that would also be handy...  i usually consider myself able to do things computer related pretty easily, this must be like leaning a foreign language, nothing makes sense

Re: hey hey

Finding and installing the correct driver can be tricky . I think everyone here has struggled with them at some point.

Re: hey hey

This is very annoying... I have that small driver file that I uploaded many moons ago simply by renaming the tag to .xxx from .exe and attaching the file to a post.  Now I have tried everything to post it here - no go.

http://www.soliforum.com/topic/13126/wi … 0-drivers/
Post #6.  The file is still a viable d/l, and works.

Someone please tell me why I can't attach the same file today...  I know I'm getting old, but.....
