Topic: Davinci Junior Fan Redirection

I've seen others who have made modifications to their printers to blow air where the filament is extruded to allow it to cool quicker. Is the purpose of this to prevent distortion? Such as, when I print bigger objects the filament shrinks on the edges. I printed a box and the edges lifted up so it isn't perfectly level. I printed half of a TieFigher and the wings are distorted so I can't glue them together without a gap present. Would making a funnel that screws onto the front of the existing fan and directs the airflow down to where the filament extrudes help prevent this?

I've started working on a design that might do this but want to know if it will help anything before doing more.

Re: Davinci Junior Fan Redirection

A cooling fan basically helps with overhangs, and it indeed can make a worlds difference in print quality as long as its done right.

The one thing you need to be careful of is accidentally cooling the printhead, but thats easy enough to solve, just make a vent that attaches to the fan so it blows on the print but not the printhead itself. big_smile

Also if your talking about the fan on the extruder... I would not recommend messing with it, its basically there to make sure the hotend doesn't overheat and jam up.

Instead get a PC fan and mount it on the extruder, then run the power cord up alongside the filament tube and power it externally.
