Topic: Cold-End Help (Was formerly a Hot-End)

After 3 days of use, my new hot-end has died.  The resistor no longer has any resistance and no longer heats up.

I've asked Solidoodle for a replacement.

Since I don't really want to have the printer sitting around for the next few weeks waiting for my replacement, does anyone know the exact type of resistor that is now being used as the heating element?

I have an electronics store nearby that has everything you could imagine, so I'd like to pick up a few spares today.

Thanks!
Brent

Re: Cold-End Help (Was formerly a Hot-End)

On the solidoodle original head, they actually use nichrome wire. It's a surprisingly high-quality method [most solidoodle stuff is cheaper] but its not very suitable for replacement.  I'm not sure what gauge they have, but from what I recall I think it's something like 6.3Ohm resistance (I hope I'm not wrong.)

So you would need coated nichrome wire, and the clay type that they use. I ended up upgrading to the qu-bd nozzle, which is a very cheap aluminum block nozzle with a power resistor (or I opted for the premium catridge heater.)

~6 ohms is correct, for the power resistor and nichrome variants.

The solidoodle replacement is a new type now

It is the new hot-end that I have, and that died.

That's why I ordered 2 when my original died.

3 days? Solidoodle might want to rethink that design.

Re: Cold-End Help (Was formerly a Hot-End)

Oh!

If you have the new kind, it looks like the resistor from qu-bd might work (6.8ohm, slightly high, but that doesnt matter much for the nozzle.) http://store.qu-bd.com/product.php?id_product=24  . They ship quickly.

I also bought their cartridge heater.

So, summary:

If your electronics store has one, look for a 3W power resistor within about 6 to 7ohms. However!! You really should get an enamel/epoxy-covered one, if you can.  But it's understandable that you may not find an enamel covered one, but they withstand the temperatures better.

Got a resistor AND their cartridge heater on order, thanks!

Re: Cold-End Help (Was formerly a Hot-End)

Be careful with their 12v cartridge heater, the wires will come off if mishandled or bend too often.  It's a pain to resolder them.  I have mine zip tied in place now; the wires that is.
