Topic: Does anyone have "recipes" of special colors to share?

I know I've seen a few in another thread, but it'd be cool to see what colors people have been able to create for filament. Something like 1 cup pellets, 1/2tsp red, 1/4tsp = purple as an example. Anyone want to share? Different shades of colors are welcome too!

Lots of info about colorants can be found in the DIY filamet reviews, and from my experiance mixing colorants *can* lead to extremely slow extrusion. Dont be discurged by that though.

Ulitmaker 2, a few repraps, Custom Big FFF 3D printer with heated chamber.

I don't see how mixing multiple colorants can make extruding slower than just one color if they're all the same size/brand, but anyways this is about seeing what colors people have come up with, not different colorants or reviews.

If you have some known mixtures that is especially slow, please post the, in the DIY filament section. Could be very useful.

That's the thread I was talking about, but it's mostly off topic and only a few colors are posted there.

Well turquoise is one, but other than that nothing in particular. Just any and all colors that people have been able to create.

Re: Does anyone have "recipes" of special colors to share?

Everyone has his/her vision of how a special color is, so if you say turqoise it's impossible to know exactly what you are after.
Typically turqoise is blue, green and white in different measures. Perhaps 30% blue 20% green and 50% white (just a guess).

Less white for a darker variant and more for a lighter, tinting more or less green or blue,  so you see it's impossible to say.

I'm not asking for a specific color though. I'm asking people to share colors they've made so others can replicate them if they choose.

I'm going to try to combine the ink from an old CYMK tank (it did't work as a printer reserve, the ink 'exploded' over me and a wall)
I have shringes ready to combine these ratios. Does anyone know how the ABS masterbatch is made? Ink or dissolved powder in ABS and acetone?

Here's the link so you can zoom in to read the numbers. http://image.spreadshirtmedia.com/Publi … color2.jpg

Masterbatch pellets are made from powdered colorant mixed at a high load ratio.  As soon as I perfect the process, we will start selling powdered colorant.

I've also dissolved ABS into acetone and put some acrylic art green with it. The mixture solidifies on the surface as you put  the acrylic on. I quickly put the setting mash between foil and squeezed it into as long a flat as possible. I will cut and compare with the ink infused one.

Re: Does anyone have "recipes" of special colors to share?

Hi,

I have used the following method to get a quick evaluation of how a colorant mixture  and resin
will look when made into filament. Weigh out accurately as you can a small quantity of masterbatch
mixture and virgin resin in the desired ratio. You can even chop up masterbatch pellets into very small
bits to keep the quantities down and not waste a lot of resin and masterbatch in your experiments.
Cover a hotplate with aluminum foil and put the mixture on the foil covered hotplate. As the mixture
melts stir with a toothpick until homogeneous. Cool and evaluate the colored resin.
Using this method you can quickly get a very accurate determination of what your colored
filament will look like and not waste a lot of masterbatch, resin and time.
Weighing accuracy of course is very important to this method. Small very accurate electronic scales
can be bought on eBay for a relatively cheap cost.

Just a quick question from a newbie - is it possible to mix in powdered pigment instead of masterbatch pellets? Has anyone done this and what sort of ratios worked?

Re: Does anyone have "recipes" of special colors to share?

It would seem to me that a powdered colorant would be messy, and more difficult to change from one color to another since, the Filastruder would have to be completely cleaned between color batches.

I think the real answer would be to find a way to pre-dye the plastic before extruding.
