Topic: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

EDIT-Sorry to Mods for posting in wrong spot, I forget theres other parts other than general discussion-

So far im less then happy...ive had it break on spool in random spots super brittle (ABS btw) and whats deal w raggity layers and gunk on gear

Seems to be their problem...used snother and not nearly as brittle SD bang up job again...bums

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

You can shim the spring. You either need more tension or you have the pivot screw too tight.

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

I cut off 10' of their filament and it snapped in 8 spots with little to no pressure...out of the 4 they sent this was only roll in their packaging and with their name on spool. My two main problems I need to fix are when I add project to RH the scaling is way off...that picture above was for an x bracket....about 10x too big it scales them up wrong. The other (depending on what I go to print) the print will start 10-40mm off bed, just start printing mid air....if you can help with either I'll buy ya all the cold beers you want big_smile

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

I SEe on the extruder gear where it is just grinding the heck out of it. That's usually from either filament that got too moist, too much tension, or just a bad batch bc it's slowing up in the hot end

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

I'd say either moist filament or clogged/semi-clogged nozzle.
Since you say the filament is brittle, likely moist. I've used two SD filament rolls. Not the best (dark points in places) but sure doesn't break easily.

Or maybe they sent you PLA instead of ABS, heard of such mix-ups before.

BTW I see you got an MK2 heater. Does it keep the filament from un-sticking/warping closer to the edges? Mine is lost in shipping.

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

Red the MK2 does great job (so far) at keeping things stuck. No glue or anything just the glass (hairspray in between MK2 and glass) but im still fiddling with the orher problems Instated above, so I cant say how well it does in 100% done models but nonproblems w plastic not sticking so far

On the brightside, I had to change some things in my order and substitute parts w others and I told SD anout the brittle spool, guy said hes sending new spool out today...SD doing the right thing, not sure if all the recent bitching and bad press on social media lately is making them change or what but nontheless ill have a new spool. Now what to do w this almost full spool of junk

SD can be a pain to deal with. They've dropped the ball on a parts order I had recently, but when I spoke with them, they sent my order out same day. Did I get the right parts? No. big_smile Did they fix that? You bet. My last experience with them was above and beyond. And that was well before the Press ever left China.

Keep the bad filament sealed and free of moisture. You can use it to make some slurry to combat lifting or as glue without tapping into your good filament.
OR! You could use it for target shooting which is pretty ok wink

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

You should go pick up a 625zz bearing and throw the mk5 extruder on there. I guarantee that spool is usable. Might meed some oven time, worst case. You can't do much when you can't adjust the tension easily.

I buy all my ABS from octave. Works great.

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

Good idea on slurry Azerate thanks, and jago i have all the bearings because i bought a set that had ones i needed for all my mods of e3d v6 and for lmu88 conversion. I just need to fix those two problems before i can print out new carriages and bracket.

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

Nothing surprising, Solidoodle Support specifically is pretty good generally. smile

When you get this issue fixed, try printing something at the edges. This thermal images seems pretty disappointing and I don't think at 82C ABS will stick...

Then again I've only heard good things about MK2 so maybe its just a bad version of Mk2 (Mk2 is just a design, many companies make or sell it) or its not an issue in practice.
So yeah, try it out when you get the time. If it sticks and you don't see warping, you're good.
And next step for you will probably be fixing backlash.

As for the brittle spool, don't throw it away yet. Keep it in a dry place and it should eventually release the moisture, if there is any. Some have speeded this up by placing their spools in an oven (don't remember the temp) or dehumidifier.
Then check if it became more elastic.

Re: SOlidoodle brand filament problem

Thanks a lot red, i have a bunch of problems...damn thing wants to pront off bed (even though I resized bed in RH and firmware, prints way above bed, and the scaling issue) dont know where to start lol
