Topic: what is this fan for anyway?

The SD4 fan on the left of the extruder. what is its purpose? Seems like it cools the filament before it gets in the extruder and is melted.

Re: what is this fan for anyway?

If the filament gets too hot from the stepper, build plate, heat rising from the hot end, it can get softer and become more prone to bending below the extruder gear rather than getting pushed into the hot end.

Keeps anything above the heater core cool enough to prevent filament jams.

This + also shears more easily at the extruder gear,  and can swell in the cold zone. But mostly what Ian said.
