hot end replacement

hey there
was wondering what people thought about replacing the hot end or if anyone has done it with one that you can remove the nosle.
as it is used for bed leveling was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how that connection is made.(ie.is a charge run through the bed plate clips and the extruder is ground pulling down or up the voltage) and if you could get away with drilling a hole in an ebay one and putting a long set screw so you can dial in the distance that it needs to be to get its z offset to the build platform.
