Topic: Recycling Abs

Has anyone tried grinding ABS after being froze in liquid nitrogen? There was an article on it last spring, but I have not heard of anyone trying it since then. I have access to cheap liquid nitrogen sine we use it on our ranch for freeze branding and AIing cattle. It seems like simple way to grind abs with only a standard household blender.  I recently purchased a filastruder so I am just starting out

Re: Recycling Abs

Only article I've seen is where they did the frozen ABS to a blender that they took a soldering iron and punched holes in the side of to use as a "sizing grate".

I don't doubt it would work, but I'm curious how everyone has enough ABS prints available to make ruining even one blender worth it? On a side note if your a ranch operation, wouldn't using a hammermill be a lot easier? I'm guessing you probably have one around for feed grinding, or something similar.

Re: Recycling Abs

I have successfully use a cheap blender to recycle PLA. I suspect that it will work with ABS. However it is a lot of effort and time to grind plastic when the raw materials are so cheap.

If you want to try using a blender I suggest starting with small prints first so you build up ~1 inch layer of finely chopped plastic near the blades. This way when you insert a larger print if doesn't bound around nearly as much allowing you to better grind it. This also noticeably lowers the stress on the blender when it running and helps to prevents jams.

Yes we have a hammer mill, but that would be to hard to keep containments out. I'll do some testing in the coming weeks and let you guys know if it works.
