Topic: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

If you're having trouble with the included shaft key washer, feel free to grab a dowel pin from the store to use instead:

http://www.filastruder.com/products/shaft-dowel-pin

I've made them free, just pay shipping. The pins are made out of 18/8 (300 series) stainless steel. If your washer is already holding then there's no need to replace it.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

Put it on the flat of the motor shaft, secure with one wrap of tape, slide into the socket so the pin is in the corner of the square opening.

Added you to the list to be notified when enclosures are ready. The rest of the items you can get through the store once you're ready to purchase.

Thanks!

Got impatient and came up with another interesting solution to the issue until my dowel pins arrive....

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

What diameter is the pin? My washers are now round (they didn't survive the motor upgrade) and I need to have the Filastruder operational by EOD Friday so I can show it at the Maker Faire on Saturday (Orlando). Rather than overnighting a pin, I'll hit local hardware stores. I'm sure I can find something to jam in there. :-)

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

3/32".

If you order one from the store, I think you should have it by EOD Friday.

Alternatively a 4-40 machine screw with the head cut off should work. Preferably stainless.

Ordered. :-)

But I'll probably swing by the hardware store to be on the safe side. I'd rather have an extra pin than none. :-)

I picked up a 3/32" "tension pin" at the hardware store. It wasn't solid stainless steel but was made of zinc rolled into a tube. It didn't work - it compressed slightly (there was a gap between the ends) and didn't do the trick. Ah well, at least it was a cheap experiment.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

You can try getting a 3/32 drill bit, and cut off the shank.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

I ended up using a .050" gauge block.... certainly not the best use for such a thing.  However, they are usually the correct width (.375") and are hardened steel.  Mine works great!

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

Yeah, my washer last all about 30 seconds.  I managed to get it to cooperate using a nail I chopped up around that size.  Nails are hard enough.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

I think a gauge block would work. But I'm having trouble finding one locally. I think I'll try the washers again. And what the heck, ordered another set of pins to try with the original motor. :-) I'll beat this thing one way or another!

I got the nozzle off, cleared out a chunk of back/burnt gunk, the rest looked soft so I left it. I poked a 1.5 mm hex key into the nozzle while it was hot, and it went in a good half inch, so I think that's clear.

So, how did it work? Did the gator grip hold onto the motor axel well?

That assembly is too long to fit within your enclosure.

Yeah, I went and measured a gator grip, and it's HUGE. There's only 3/4 of an inch between the end of the motor axle and the end of the feed screw. So tonight I'll be buying washers and taping them to the old (slower) motor axle to see if I can get that to work, even if it's not as cool/fast as the new motor. Washers are cheap, so if I have to keep crushing and replacing them, it's cheap, and at least Ill be extruding.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

You shouldn't keep crushing them - its not meant to be a wear part! I have run 500 hours on a washer before. Make sure it is at least 1.3mm thick.

If it holds for a few hours, it should be good for hundreds.

Yeah, sorry, I'm just cranky. I'm sure that once I get it working again, I'll be my usual optimistic self. :-)

No you're fine - its my fault, and it should work the first time out of the box. I think that the tape wrap will solve it, as this takes up about 400 microns of clearance. Let me know how it goes.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

Mine orginally Ran for about 10 hours and then shredded. Replaced it with a washer I had laying around and iit lasted about 30 mins. I went to Local Hardware and picked up a pack of flat washers and cut one down. Its been going strong since.

Posted in another thread, but to close the loop here...

I got it working by going back to the original motor and using two #6 washers, hammered into place (with a screwdriver holding them in place during the hammering). I couldn't hold two stacked up with tape as the collar pushed the tape (and thus the washers) down. One washer did nothing other than turn 'round'.

I'm having no luck with the new motor. I will try to grind down the axle to get more 'flat' to transmit torque with, and jam in washers.

Now that I have filament extruding, well, at least I know that it can extrude, and the nozzle is clear, etc.. So feeling much better about the world of Filastruding.

Re: Free upgrade - Dowel Pin

After running for 5 hours, the motor got in a bind, I'm guessing from particles blocking the nozzle, and crushed the dowel pin. How do I go about getting another one? Are they available to those without washers as well?
