Topic: Need advice on Replica Gun project...

Hey guys, I've got a concept in the early stages, and I need to know whether it will fly.

I live in Australia, and Custom won't even let us have Toy guns coming into the country,so we are now looking at the idea of producing the items domestically (which is legal)

We have around 3000 AUD (2700 USD) in which to get the 3d printer with.



this is what we would be aiming to produce, and from there we would fit Airsoft accesories to complete the rifle to look like the real thing...

Would this plan work? How much would we need to pay for the CAD files, and what kind of printer do you suggest?

Have the laws changed recently ? Last I checked (probably 2 years ago), possession still required a licence as they are currently treated the same as paintball and air rifles in most states (i.e, no different to 'actual' firearms...)... the importation was a separate issue again.

Would be good if its changed.. but I didn't think it had legal status yet and possession remained the primary concern from a legal standpoint.. and checking http://www.comlaw.gov.au/ , www.legislation.nsw.gov.au and www.legislation.act.gov.au would seem to say it hasn't changed... so possession certainly in the ACT or NSW would get you slapped under prohibited weapons... any imitation weapon or replica in fact will ? And given the recent press conferences from the AFP regarding the 3D Printed 'actual' firearm... It wouldn't exactly fly 'under the radar' I wouldn't have thought... *shrug* but I am just going off my own knowledge/available resources I've checked so feel free to correct me ! smile

As for the design - depends on the specifics of the design and just how much PSI you intend it to run at etc etc. Any form of FDM printing will have weaknesses along the layer joins (which is what your price range restricts you to)

You may have better success using SLA printing, as you have slightly stronger parts as long as you make them thick enough...

They will be printed in non gun colours, so orange or white.
