Topic: Upgrades Paths

A request to Solidoodle:

When upgrading parts shipped on existing revisions (2/3) of the Solidoodle, especially where those parts are meant to solve existing problems, please provide an easy upgrade path for those of us with the old parts. Using the motherboard as an example, a package including an adapter plate, whatever screws needed, the new power supply and wiring instructions would be most welcome. Given that the motherboard upgrade will supposedly help alleviate a well known problem with the existing board (overheating leading to missed steps) it really would be nice for those of us whose prints all turn to modern art a few hours in.

Re: Upgrades Paths

That's in general a good request, but in the specific case, I wouldn't "upgrade" my sanguinololu to a printrboard (i.e. the new SD motherboard). It might be more robust in this specific case, but it has the drawback that if one stepper driver fails, you need to replace the whole board. I would rather spend some money to buy better stepper drivers with heatsink to fit to your current board, or spend even less money to add a fan on the electronics.

Re: Upgrades Paths

Better choices for motherboard upgrades:

Arduino 2560 with Ramps 1.4
Azteeg X3

There are more choices but these are the ones that have good how-to's

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: Upgrades Paths

Too bad the raspberry pi couldnt be used.

I am an open book, write on my pages that I may learn the wisdom that you posses.

Re: Upgrades Paths

It can, but you need a breakout board with stepper drivers. That's the route Pirate3D is taking.

The Rumba looks awesome. It's the ramps board and Arduino all rolled into one easy package. They even found enough time to add a 6th stepper driver slot. This will be my next board. (but won't be giving up my ramps anytime soon)

Seriously though, this board needs it's own thread.

Yeah, similar angle as the Azteeg X3.

But I'm a fan of the shield, as it can be able to be plugged into things like the Udoo http://www.udoo.org/ .. which besides the Logic Level differences (and there are means and ways to deal with that smile ), it otherwise bolts straight onto.... giving you the Arduino Due and an I.MX6 board all on the one piece of FR4...

Stop showing me these things! I am going to run out of money. I could think of 1000 different things to do with that.
