Topic: Clogging and shipping times for parts?

I got my Solidoodle 3 just last Thursday and unfortunately already broke it. After tinkering with it for about 2 hours I started getting really nice prints (better than I expected). Unfortunately it didn't last long, only printing for about 4 hours total, the hot end clogged. I still have no idea why that happened. I always had the extruder turn off when not printing (set it to do so in Repetier host). I also don't think the z distance was wrong since I got really nice prints and had only few issues with the ABS sticking to the bed. Anybody any idea what went wrong?

Trying to fix the blockage, I removed the extruder. I couldn't unscrew the nozzle, even after heating it up more than I was comfortable with. After working on it for over 45mins, I eventually broke the threaded rod the nozzle is screwed onto. Since I broke it anyways, I tried to unscrew it with excessive force. Which eventually worked, but the force required would have made it impossible to unscrew it without breaking it. So I ordered a new Extruder Hot End Thursday night. It hasn't shipped yet even though it is in stock. How long does it usually take them to ship it out? Are there any other companies that make compatible hot ends? I'm just trying to figure out what my options are if it breaks again, and I want a replacement fast. (I heard the J-Heads are compatible, any experience with their shipping times?)

Your prints look pretty good.
As far as replacement hot ends try doing a search on here for hotends for specifics.

Ones that I have seen:

OEM From Solidoodle
J-Head - May require slight mod to work but should be a direct replacement
E3D All metal - Moderate Modifications required (additional power for at least 1 fan (MUST DO), MK4 or Briggs extruder, search E3D for more)
PrintrBot Hot end - Moderate Modifications Required (MK4 Upgrade, new connectors on thermistor and hot end, z-tab extension, PEEK retainer, PTFE tubing and an exact-o knife for fine tuning)

There are others but these are some that stick out in my mind.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

It takes them 3-4 weeks to ship hotends.

Just got my Solidoodle replacement hot end tonight after 2 week waiting time...

As an aside, is there anything that should be done to prep this guy?  Or is it just plug in and go?

Make sure all connections are tight. Others have received replacement hotends that started oozing as soon as they started to use them.

You should recalibrate your PID settings.

3-4 weeks for hotends? Really hope mine doesn't give out any time soon...

I like to have a spare in case it does go down or get clogged, I can switch it quickly and keep printing while repairing or cleaning the other.

Wow, it takes them 3-4 weeks to ship a hot end that is in stock according to the website? That is just wrong. I own a small business myself and would never dare to list something as "in stock" and then make the customer wait for 3-4 weeks (I'll ship the same or next day). I'll be canceling my order and get a j-head. Does anybody know if the the j-head will fit into the original acrylic jigsaw mount?

It 'fits' - however - the original SD hotend is screwed through a wooden plate and acrylic block that bolts to the carriage. You would need to recreate this for the J-Head to mount correctly in the existing jigsaw - or you need to remove it from the existing OEM hot-end in a non-destructive way... (means unscrewing the brass barrel from the PEEK which some people even when heated have been unable to achieve)

@adrian Thanks for the reply. I had no problem removing the barrel from the PEEK (unlike the nozzle, that was impossible to remove).  I'm not sure if I understood correctly. Can I use the same acrylic block and wood plate, or will I have to make a new one with slightly different dimensions?

I'm pretty sure its the same dimensions, but let me confirm when I'm back in front of my printer in a couple of hours.

Looks like you will have to drill the wood out a little bit, but I don't think you would even need the wood. The wood piece applies pressure to the square acrylic spacer that sandwiches the mount. If anything you would need the wood as a retainer to keep the j-head from coming out of the acrylic.
