Topic: Slicer Thoughts

I started with SL3 because it was integrated with RH and had little luck with Skeinforge. I went to KISSlicer based on recommendations here and it is fast but object placement is terrible and some settings are not available such as control of top and bottom layers.

What else is out there? Is there an easy way to resize and do basic manipulations of STLs out side of the slicer programs?

Also, I think the G-code from Kiss is inferior to SL3 and I get a lot of strings and less precision using Kiss.

Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

Re: Slicer Thoughts

but yes,  kisslicer is less tolerant on geometry error than slic3r.. but depending on model one is better than the other...
i found that if it's for mechanical part... slic3r
for organical part like character.. kissclicer

Re: Slicer Thoughts

I've just been using Slic3r, since it's an option in RH, but I tried KISSlicer last night, and really liked the results I got.  I've tried Skeinforge, but the interface is a nightmare, and no matter what I change, it keeps retracting my filament and backs it right out of the extruder, so I've given up on trying it for now.

Re: Slicer Thoughts

I tried the same object today on Kiss and Sl3. Kiss took 30 seconds but the g-code preview was bad at best.

Sl3 took 12 minutes and g-code preview was beautiful.

I'm going to see how I like Cora too.

Anybody know anything about the "professional" versions out there?

Re: Slicer Thoughts

What was bad about the gcode preview in KS?  Generally KS is better, Slic3r tends to cross perimeters a lot more creating more opportunities for blobs and strings.

I don't know how the slicing is for Up.  Last I heard Netfabb didn't support retraction which is a deal breaker, thought they might have had an update.  My understanding of the high end printers is that they allow very little tweaking and print everything slow and with lots of fill.
