Topic: SD2- save $100, forego heated plate, print in PLA?

Would it be possible (or wise) to buy the SD2 without the heated plate, and get it to print in PLA instead?

You could do that, then if you want to later you can add a heated bed fairly easy.

You could definitely make the heated plate for less than $100...

I would spend the $100 if you aren't comfortable with the electronics/skill level involved in adding your own.
