Topic: Banding on prints?
Does anyone have any idea why I’m getting this banding artifact on my prints? See pictures. It seems to happen after an opening when the nozzle has to turn off the filament, like when crossing an opening, and turning it back on. This makes me believe it has something to do with my retraction settings but I don’t know which way to go with it. Increase retraction, increase speed, decrease speed, etc. I’m using 3D Solutech PLA at a temperature of 215C which is what was shown to be the best on my temperature test. My printer is a Davinci Pro 1.0 with a E3d v6 hot-end with an added print cooling fan. I’m using Simplify3d and my settings are layer height .20mm, extrusion width – auto, retraction distance 2.0 mm, extra restart distance -0.60 mm, retraction speed 20 mm/s, coasting distance .10 mm/s, and coasting at end enabled. My default printing speed is 4 mm/sec. This was printed with supports in the windows which were removed after the print was finished. I think I’m going to run a couple of test prints with a 3 mm thick wall with several “windows” with different retraction settings and see if I can get any better results. Any suggestions on what settings I should try. I’ve heard that with the E3d hot-end you’re not supposed to go over 2 mm retraction because you will pull hot filament into the cold zone of the nozzle possibly causing clogs. What are your thoughts on this? Have you guys or gals have success using larger retraction settings?
