Topic: backup firmware

ello all. So last night, xyzprint released a new update for their xyzprint software. This comes with an advanced mode for printing and on the release notes, it said it fixed open filament issue. The new advanced mode is great. I know xyzware back in the day had the advanced mode. Anyway, a new firmware came out as well. But before i do the upgrade from 2.3.5, i want to back it up because i know it works with my nfc tag and reeltool. I do not know if 2.4.2 will somehow bork the reeltool from working. How does one backup their current firmware?

Has anyone tried version 2.4.2 and still been able to use reeltool and nfc tags?

Check post #1 "How to backup old firmware" section, this guide is meant for people who want to test RepRapfirmware on Jr., but it will work for your purpose too. You will need J-Link EDU mini for firmware dump though. And you will need to possibly soldering wire to main board J-Tag port.

If your machine is Da Vinci Jr. 1.0, I post backup firmware here:

You don't really need anything special to downgrade firmware back to 2.2.0 or 2.2.7 and you don't need to soldering your main board. I do not have backup for 2.3.5 though.

Well, my main question is, can a firmware stop the nfc phone tag trick from working? if not, then i will upgrade, but i dont want to loose that ability to use my third party filament haha

People report 300m filament spool no longer supported in miniMaker new firmware, my guess is similar thing will happen in Jr new firmware.

damn. im not even going to risk it then. i like 2.3.5 because i can use my reeltool 200m nfc tag trick and call it good.


I also just heard back from xyz support:

For your first concern, please be inform that you can't have the back up of the previous firmware version so please don't update it yet because currently we are having unidentified spool issue after firmware update on Jr. series. It is now under investigation of our firmware team and checking to have the resolution for the issue.


And for the XYZPrint 1.2.6, as per the release note the new features and improvement are:

1. Fix the software certification issue.
2. Fix third party filament printing issue.
