Triffid Hunter's approach was new to me, and seems easy to implement, and flexible.

Interesting. Seems like a good idea, but I'm wondering if it would be possible for an extruder to adjust its speed automatically, at least for a course adjustment. I'm thinking of a cone-shaped drive gear along with a pair of grooved wheels that size the filament; something like this (excuse the crappy drawing):
I like your idea Teal, nice and simple... I am leaning more toward the electronic solution though... that way I can factor in the 'delay' filament length offset.
