Topic: Adding a Laser to the Jr?

I have modded my Jr with a heated bed and new heater cartridge to allow me to print ABS. The next frontier is FRICKING LASERS....

Now I can jerry rig something up to attach the laser and power it, my question in how do I control it? I know I can use threedub to convert GCode into .3w So I guess I make my model in the various laser engraver softwares, set the z axis height and convert the gcode?

Anyone done this yet? I know the type of laser I want wont cut much but mainly want it for burning my Logo on wooden projects and the like.

Re: Adding a Laser to the Jr?

You would need an external supply. The power supply on the printer will not supply enough current. You will also need to change or cover any windows on the unit so they will block laser radiation of the wavelength you will be using. All it takes is one reflection and you or others could be blinded instantly.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Yeah I am planning on printing a mount to put the laser where the hotend normally goes and using a separate power supply. It will have a simple switch to turn it on and off. The issue is with tricking the printer into not trying to move z axis. Also I dont know if the printer will operate with the hotend unplugged. Might have to still have it plugged in which would be a pain but manageable.

I will cover the front plastic window with wood to save eyes!
