Topic: Face Model Trouble.

I created a model of someone's face using Autodesk 123d and I believe sealed holes and created a flat backing using Autodesk Meshmixer. I think the original file may have been an .obj file. I've had this file (FaceModelA) printed professionally at:

http://www.3daddfab.com/

without any real problems so far as the guy told me. Problem was since then I got the Solidoodle and wanted to print it out myself and wasn't able to get the face in an orientation that would make the flat side face down so the printer prints up from there. I found some guy on Craiglist who created FaceModelB which only needed a 270 degree turn to be facing up properly. So when I tried to print that for whatever reason it still didn't want to work correctly. There must be still something wrong in the formating. It appeared like it was trying to print the lower face first when it should have outlined the entire face first as the base is completely flat or so I've been led to believe. lol. Anyone know what is wrong with these? The CL guy seems to think it is a printer issue.

Re: Face Model Trouble.

I think the people who can help you need to know what slicing software you are using. I believe its possible to reorient the model from within the slicing software.

I edit my posts a lot.

I have re-oriented your model to lay flat on its back.  Used Netfab Studio Free, also repaired model. ( attached ).  You must always use top down view to re-orient your model's.  Should print now.

Good job! We haven't had much experience with 123Dcatch at SD, but we'd sure like to see you print out some faces on the SD.

I use: Repetier-Host Solidoodle

The person that tried to reorient the object claims is was in even 90 degree interval from the flat side. I am more worried at this point that the object must be missing information in order for it to print properly.

Thank you. I will give it a shot sometime tomorrow probably. What repairs did it still require?

Although free point cloud software is probably not the best out there I love the idea of creating physical replicates of things I see in my environment versus trying to make everything from scratch. smile

Re: Face Model Trouble.

Think beyond replicas.  Check out my Vine Coffee Scoop - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17610

It was more an experiment than practical, but I made a coffee scoop-tamper by constructing the handle and tamper from vines, and the scoop from leaves.  I scanned it with 123D Catch and printed it, creating a thing that could not function in its original form, and could not have survived any molding process.

You could make a mold of something fragile by scanning it, and then using the mesh for boolean cuts.  Or if you need to make one thing to fit another, scan the other thing and use it to subtract from the thing that needs to fit it.   For instance, use a scan of your face to make a mask that is custom fit to you.

There are some other things you could approach like this.  Use clay to make a handle formed for your hand, scan it, and incorporate the mesh into a larger object.   I was thinking of doing something like this to make a handle for carrying multiple plastic grocery bags so they don't cut into my hand when carrying milk jugs.

Well the face is reoriented with your file, but it still won't print properly. It is like 1/3 a CM away from the platform by the time it completes tracing the face, and for whatever reason it draws a small circle in the corner when it starts. The printer is just not understanding this file.

Re: Face Model Trouble.

You guys should check out stereoscan: http://www.agisoft.ru/products/stereoscan/

Very cool software, and it is all locally ran on your pc, unlike 123dcatch.

Just wanted to say while I awaited my SD3, I experimented a lot with 123d Catch.  If interested, you can view or download them at Thingiverse, just search for Skyblue to see all my stuff....received my SD3, and its working perfectly, thanks...

I have placed a base on your model, it should be flat now.  Let us know if it works now.  I did not actually repair anything, I used Netfab studio, and it finds stuff to repair, such as open edges, non-alligned faces etc.

Ok. I'll give this version a try. Didn't it already have a perfectly flat base? With meshmixer I thought I'd made it flat and stretched the flat section out like a platform shoe to ensure it. Was there a particular error or something that Netfab told you?

I remember no specific error, just that when I rotated your object, I probably did not get it perfectly level to bed to begin with, so I placed it on a perfectly flat object I had, and merged the two objects together using Repetier.  I know the round object is level to the bed.

So complicated just orienting stuff. I download a "flying toaster" from the old screen saver and even that file came disoriented. Fortunately within 90 degrees so I could make simple turns right before printing. It seems like there should be a way to select a flat bottom and tell a software to nail it to the ground, and then surround the object with a shrinking cube that will rotate the object until the front of it is facing the front of the printer.

Re: Face Model Trouble.

Haven't yet had a successful chance to retry this one. The base you added to it curled up quite a bit and the extruder just bounced it around like a hocket puck after a while. I'm going to have to retry this one later after I try getting an enclosure put around it.

When I have prints that curl up or warp in corners, I just spray a little abs glue on the corners after first layers have printed.  Works fine.

Re: Face Model Trouble.

What is the formula for this ABS glue? How do I apply it while the printer is going?
