Topic: How do you feed non-XYZ-filament to a Jr?

Thanks to information on these boards I can now reset filament RFID tags. I have non-XYZ-filament and would like to feed it to my Da Vinci Jr. The difficulty is that the reel is too large to fit in the 3d printer. I was wondering what others do. For example, do you wind the non-XYZ-filament on to an XYZ reel? I am worried about snags as it travels from the XYZ reel to the extruder. Is this an issue? Alternatively, one could use the non-XYZ reel as is and feed through a hole in the left side of the Jr's case. What have people found to work?

Cheers.

You make a spool holder that sits near or is mounted to the Jr. then feed the filament through the existing feed port.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

robbertob,

I just saw this post. I have a JR myself and I use https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1461527 to hold my filament spools. It works great . I also created a spool liner for the spools that have exceptionally large center holes in them. Let me know if you run into this issue and I will put it up on Thiniverse also. I also use https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1920582 to hold my tags. You may just want to continue using the white inner spool XYZ provided which also works.

Thanks for the information.

My next question is what is the best method of making a hole in the side panel. Heat? Drilling?

Cheers.

I drilled mine and I use a piece 1/4" diameter plastic tube through the hole for my filament, keeps it from binding.

I use the spool holder in the below link, sitting on the ground next to the printer and print through a hole in the side that has a custom designed feed tube I printed, but I originally just had a 5/8" hole and the filament passed through that without snagging. I used a step drill bit to cut the hole.

Re: How do you feed non-XYZ-filament to a Jr?

Thanks for the suggestions. I now have an external spool holder and inspired by Bozo's suggestion (and my own fear of trying to take a drill to the side panel) fed the filament in through a piece of plastic tube. Using a meter of PTFE tube meant I could feed the filament in through an existing hole in the top. I have now done around 20 hours or printing with the new set-up so am confident it works.

Thanks again.
