I have found that you can use up a good portion of the remainder on your cartridges without resorting to hacking the chip, if when you are down to a few metres left, you put in a model that will use 10m, it will continue printing until either it finishes, or the filament runs out, as we know there is usually some to spare, I have successfully run a 7m print when only 1m of filament was left. once the count reaches 0 however, it wont let you start a print.

This sounds good, but at that point you are no longer able to swap the tag with someone else. Once the tag hits zero, the XYZ firmware locks the chip. It either changes the password or the pack code. Now if you take the chip before it hits zero. You can swap that tag out with someone in your region, load the tag back up to 300m and you are good to go.

i've found that if you have one of those 3d doodler pins, you can use the material up "doodling" or even reinforcing a few other prints. and ive found those pins at michaels for as cheep as $40.00 and some change. mine works pretty well and has been a good way to use whats left on a spool thats not enough for 3d printing.
