Topic: Stall Protection kicked in

After assembling the Filastruder with lots of trouble, because the Chinese power supply used a wire with a - on for +, I have run the thing for about two days in my greenhouse.

And suddently it stopped working.

Swichting on and off Motor or Main plug does give power, but the stall protection does not give power to the moter.

What must I do to get the struder running again?
Is there a manual for the stall protection?

Is there FAQ for the most common problems?

Re: Stall Protection kicked in

What is the current (in amps) as shown on the stall protection board's display?

If around 1.6A, then the protection is set properly and protection is kicking in because the motor is overloaded. Some possible causes:

- Polymer is not sufficiently heated
- The shaft collar has slipped, allowing the auger to push against the gearbox bearings. No thrust force should be transmitted to the gearbox.

If the shaft collar has slipped, options are to push the auger into the barrel (with the barrel heated up) and reposition the shaft collar, or add some spacers between the gear motor and chassis to move the gear motor away from the auger.

Re: Stall Protection kicked in

After hours of troubleshooting, I finally found the problem:

It is the gearbox.
The motor will run, if the gearbox is not connected to the assembly.
Voltage is ok, Ampere too.

Stall protection will even kick in, if the barrel is empty.

Is there a repair guide for that gear box.
Or can you send me a properly working one.

I mean the thing should function more than 10 hours of use.

Re: Stall Protection kicked in

I'm unclear as to what is occurring based on your reply. If the gearmotor output shaft spins when the gearmotor is not connected to the auger, then I don't think the problem is the gearbox.

If the barrel is truly empty, then there would be no load on the gearmotor as the auger would be able to spin freely (even by hand) with a truly empty barrel.

Based on the 10 hour comment, I suspect that the shaft collar has slipped - generally if the shaft collar is not sufficiently tightened during assembly, it slips in the first 10 hours or so, transferring thrust load to the gearbox. It is possible for the gearbox to be damaged in this scenario.

Can you check that the hex socket has axial play with the gearmotor and barrel/auger assembly mounted to the chassis as normal? There needs to be axial play (a few millimeters) like in the attached video.

Re: Stall Protection kicked in

Sorry, it is not the shaft collar.
Could you please post a picture of how the gearwheels are to be positioned inside the gearbox?

Re: Stall Protection kicked in

After another filastruder repair day, I got it working for 2 two hours again.

I have opened the gearbox put the things together again. Adjusted the shaft collar and it worked except for giving only very inconsistant output that can not be used for printing... +- 0.80 mm

After two hours the Shaft Collar pushed back, blocked the gearbox and the thing made awfull loud sounds and the motor gearwheel kept on turning without connection to the other gearwheels.. No stall protection kicking in.

It is clearly the gearbox damaged.

I am very disappointed. The amount of work, that I put in to make the filastruder run, would easily bought me a professional and working extruder, if I had worked for money on minimum wage instead. I think I have disassembled the thing like 50 times or so.

I seriously regret buying the thing.
Thanks for the tip with the shaft collar.

But why, didn't you put in a fitting washer, if you know that the shaft collar tends to loosen und to block the thing and that a washer can prevent this?

I mean it would have been much cheaper then replacing the gearbox...

I didn't have any trouble with the shaft collar slipping on units I assembled here, I suppose I tightened the shaft collar more. Once a few user reports came in about the shaft collar slipping, I redesigned things so the shaft collar cannot slip (it is already up against the conical section).

It is difficult to design around problems until they manifest themselves. I am sorry you have had to spend so much time troubleshooting, but I've tried to give quick answers to assist in said troubleshooting.

I am happy to send you a gearmotor, get in touch via the Filastruder contact form and link this thread + your order number.

Re: Stall Protection kicked in

That is great news... I will not give up until I have this thing running as it should.

Kind regards

Hi...i am a new user here. As per my knowledge If the barrel is truly empty, then there would be no load on the gearmotor as the auger would be able to spin freely with a truly empty barrel. It is possible for the gearbox to be damaged in this scenario.
