Topic: Food safe coatings.

Has anyone come across anythingnthat can be used as a coating to make printed objects food safe. so far the only thing I have come across is a food safe enamel by rustoleum but it only comes on galon tins for ~$100. I have also come across people talking about food safe epoxies but I haven't been able to find any for sale.

Re: Food safe coatings.

I have read that thread and many like it several times. As pointed out by one of the posters "unless a chemical specifically says it is food safe then you assume it isn't." The ABS we print is not food safe and printing in any material will not be food safe. The filaments are not made to those standards and likely contain additives that may be harmful. In addition when printing with it additional contaminants are introduced. One poster suggested to just use a polyurethane from Home Depot. I would advise against this. It is not intended to ever have food contact, rather it is made to be a wood finish and could have any number of toxic compounds in it. I have found companies that do make food and medical grade polyurethanes but no where that sells them.

I believe PLA is safe, might be worth a shot.

Re: Food safe coatings.

It might be foodsafe before it comes out the extruder, but that doesnt mean it will be afterwards.  The hotend itself can taint the plastic.

I would be more worried about what is in the food itself than how food safe the container is...

The thing I'm most looking to use it with is booze in shot glasses.  Alcohol has a tend to leach things out very easily.
