Topic: Big prints and glass bed

I printed on kapton. The print sticks to the bed like glued.
Removing the print damages the kapton film.
So I tried glass with hairspray. works perfect for small prints.
But now I tried some bigger prints and all of them don't stick to the bed till the end of the print (begins with warping).
Is the bed temperature of 100 too high ?
Or is there a method to remove prints from kapton without damaging it?

I use a Cricut spatula to remove prints.  It works sweet on Kapton.
They sell them online , walmart or target

Re: Big prints and glass bed

Have you thought about putting kapton on glass then you can put the whole thing in the freezer to make it pop off. I haven't tried glass yet as my bed works quite well but you are right you have to be very careful or the kapton gets damaged so I plan on making some glass/kapton sheets to start using if for nothing else to save time as it can take about 5-10 minutes to get some of the larger things off the bed.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

enclose your build environment with plexiglass or even cardboard, this will help warping on larger prints

Already did that. First without Top Cover. Now fully closed it seems to work. I have to elaborate this.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

I would suggest using glass with the hairspray and small binder clips. Using hairspray just inside the printer could start to clog up various components.  Then you just take the glass out and put a new piece in there.  If you want to keep using the kapton and not glass on top of the kapton, just clean the kapton with a swipe of isopropyl alcohol instead of hairspray.

It is also important to let the bed cool off for awhile before trying to remove the print if you are on the kapton.  Another reason to use some cheap glass from your local hardware store instead.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

I'm using glass with hairspray clipped to the bed. Parts won't stick to the glass like they do with kapton. I never use the hairspray inside the printer.
I will try glass with kapton on it. Sounds like a perfect solution.... we will see!

Re: Big prints and glass bed

Also try adding a skirt to give more surface area to stick

Re: Big prints and glass bed

Are you heating your bed?  I heat my bed to 70C with glass + hairspray.  If it isnt sticking your Ztab probably needs adjusting.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

Yes I have a heated bed. Don't think that my z axis is the problem. Under 100 °C the abs won't stick... Maybe wrong hairspray?
I tested kapton tape on glass. Sticks perfect and produces less muck (removing the hairspray from the glass after the print).
My suggestion is to use kapton on glass. Easy to change, reuseable and sticks like hell!

Re: Big prints and glass bed

kapton is expensive tho. i used u-line masking tape on glass on aluminum heated bed and the parts stick so hard it was near impossible to remove. downside is that getting the parts off often means ripping up the masking tape too so i had to re-tape it quite a lot...

Re: Big prints and glass bed

There isn't really any need to clean the hairspray off the glass after a print, especially if you are just going to put more on for the next.  You can go several prints with one application of hairspray, and adding more just helps create the texture that the ABS grabs onto.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

if it isn't sticking I would suggest adjusting your zTab a tad.  some photos of it laying down the first layer can help diagnosis the issue as well.

Having none of these problems. I take the glass of the bed and put it somewhere to cool down. Then you can easily remove the print and the kapton stays on the glass.
Kapton isn't that expensive. If you buy a piece of kapton at Solidoodle you can buy a full roll of kapton tape which I used for more than 2 glass beds and there is enough left smile

First layer looks good and like the pics in the wiki/forum.
Of course I'm currently adjusting all axis again. Yesterday I recognized that my x-axis is loose on the right side. Don't know why.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

Hello everyone.  Just a tip I have discovered while walking through Walmart.  Go to the picture frame department, they have boxes of small mirrors, 6" for you SD2 guys, and 8" for Sd3 users.  Less than $4.00 each, a steal, you can't get cut glass for that cheap.  Also a mirror has to be perfectly smooth, or else the image would be blurred.  The 8" mirrors fit the SD3 bed perfectly, and I attach with small clips.  I just use Abs glue, no Kapton tape!  Bonus, these mirrors are concave on the sides, preventing a hot end crash if your bed is not leveled while homeing the extruder. 1/8 " thick...............Looks great also.
You must print the z-axes screw replacement part to use glass..... prints remove very easily, and stick well.
Also, while at Fry's, I found led strip lights, for around $40.00.  Remote control, color changes, fit the SD3 perfectly.

Not to be an Indian spammer or something, but my father and I actually ship in stuff like that from china. I have some samples of the LED strips and controllers if any of y'all want some, I can see what we can part with. I also have LED light bulbs flying out my wazoo...

And by the way, Fry's (like any retailer)gouges the shit out of people on those strips, they cost something like $2 a foot (Probably less).

Edit: I was way off with the prices

Unfortunately no.

But I did get this really interesting email from someone of Nigerian Royalty offering me Gold in exchange for a front payment... lol

In all seriousness, I've actually stoke some up to the underside of my shelving I'm using for my build area, it lights the area pretty well and I can change the colors. Now it just needs a printer!

Here is 12V led strip for $2.80 and free shipping.  This is my go-to place for cheap (pricewise and sometimes qualitywise) electronics:

Sadly, their filament is still pricey.

Yeah, I was talking about multicolored lights, variable light patterns, remote control, 2 12" strips and connectors, power supply and controler for under $40.00.
2x18=36 plus freight, no colors, no remote etc...  I rest my case....

If only it changed according to temperature... and when it's ready to print/ there is a problem.

Oh, it needs to be able to make coffee too!

What's the $18 from?  2x3 = $6 with free shipping (and no sales tax).  Nothing included, but a good source for parts if you're building something yourself.

Re: Big prints and glass bed

Who was it here early on that had done a mod where the LEDs changed colors when it was heating, and when it had reached temp, etc.  I forgot about that until now.  Probably in Sept of last year or something.
