Topic: Printrbot Simple aluminum extruder

I was wondering about using the printrbot simple aluminum extruder on my SD4 or possibly a soon to be purchased Prusa I3.
It seems like a solid design especially if you get the one from printrbot. the lever is a bit longer. I expect it should work on any direct drive Nema 17 stepper. and it appears the hole in the bottom is designed to be compatible with and ED3 v6 or lite.
Other than these requiring a bit of machining and therefore a bit pricey at around $40 - $60  is there any major reason not to use one of these. the other option of course is to print one. I do like the idea of at least the bottom part being aluminum.

it's designed to be mounted on a horizontal surface, so you'll need to account for that. 

As for the hot end, they use the Ubis hot end, but the head diameter, mounting groove location and depth are the same for most hot ends, so it should fit without any machining.

I have a Printrbot simple and the aluminum extruder works quite well.  You'll have to provide some cooling at the front though, as it does have a tendency to warm up the filament to the point of it warping and jumping out of the hobbed gear groove, or wrap itself around the axle.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...
